PAIR OF BROTHERS CONVICTED OF 1986 LAWRENCE COUNTY DOUBLE MURDER ARE UP FOR PAROLE

DOUBLE MURDERERS DONALD LEVOUGHN GUSSLER & MONTIE GUSSLER ARE UP FOR PAROLE IN FOUR MONTHS

Two notorious brothers from Lawrence County who were convicted of the brutal and sadistic killing of an elderly Lawrence County man and his daughter in May 1986 are coming up for parole this coming May, at almost 35 years to the day of their vicious criminal actions.

Donald Levoughn Gussler, 60, is currently incarcerated at the Little Sandy Correctional Complex in Sandy Hook, in Elliott County, Kentucky; where he is serving a life sentence for the death of Roosevelt Murray, who was 79 years old, and his daughter, Myrtle Evans, who was 57 years old, and Myrtle Evans was also the mother of nine children.

Donald Gussler’s younger brother, Montie Gussler, 57, entered a plea agreement in which he agreed to serve a life sentence with no possibility of parole and is currently at the Lee Adjustment Center, in Lee County, Kentucky; which is a private incorporated prison that has a state contract with the Kentucky Department of Corrections.

Donald and Montie Gussler, who were 20 and 17, respectively, when the crimes occurred, have parole hearings scheduled for March.

According to the court records on file, in May 1986, Donald Gussler and Montie Gussler asked Evans to use the phone and was granted permission. After using the phone, they left but returned less than five minutes later to use it again, Donald Gussler told police at the time.

When both of the Gussler brothers entered the second time, Donald Gussler picked up “a handgun and a bunch of long guns,” which included Mr. Murray’s .22 rifle, and that was when Mr. Murray, who had been ill for a period of time, according to his relatives, and who was being cared for by his daughter Ms. Evans, started fighting him (Gussler), the written confession said.

Donald Gussler told authorities that he hadn’t pointed the gun at Mr. Murray but that they “started wrestling around,” then pushed Mr. Murray to the ground where he hit his head on the wall in the kitchen, then tied him to a chair using curtains and a telephone cord, that had been jerked out of the kitchen wall by Montie Gussler.

Myrtle Evans was escorted outside the home. Moments later, Montie Gussler beat Rooseevelt Murray in the back of the head with a claw hammer, Donald Gussler said in his confession.

Donald Gussler said that he attempted to burn Nr. Murray’s body and his home by setting a mattress in one of the bedrooms on fire. Days later and before the bodies were discovered, he went back and set a second fire.

In the process, the brothers robbed Roosevelt Murray of about “5 or 6 guns and 25 pennies,” Donald Gussler said in a court transcript of his confession.

The brothers then kidnapped Myrtle Evans and forced her to drive to various locations in Lawrence County, court records said.

In an attempt to escape the Gussler brothers, Myrtle Evans told the two she had to use the restroom. They had her stop the vehicle on Brushy Hill, court records show.

“I walked behind the car and she was in front of the car,” Donald Gussler said in his confession. Donald Gussler also said that he “heard a sound like someone was running and everything went black. I went and grabbed a gun and started shooting.”

Donald Gussler told police authorities that he then fired four or five gunshots.

Myrtle Evans was shot twice in the right arm and twice in the chest, autopsy reports show. Mr. Murray’s and Ms. Evan’s bodies were not located by family members until nine days later.

Donald Gussler was also a suspect in several break-ins in the Lawrence County community during the time period in which the murders occurred, police indicated in their reports.

Since being incarcerated in a state prison, Donald Gussler has continued getting in trouble. In 1989, he was disciplined for fighting another inmate. In 2010, he was also punished for getting caught with marijuana, Kentucky Department of Corrections personnel have said.

Donald Gussler faced the state parole board May 2011, during which family members asked that he be denied parole and encouraged citizens to sign a petition to keep him incarcerated.

The exact day in this coming May of the next parole hearing for the Gussler brothers has not been set, but it assured that surviving relatives of Roosevelt Murray and Myrtle Evans will let local media and citizens of Lawrence County know when that will be taking place, and what efforts local residents can do to help in stopping the Gussler brothers getting paroled.

These two need to stay where they are! How the hell do you get parole, while serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole?

I do believe people can change and also be forgiven by The almighty God. However, they must continue to pay for the evil acts they committed ! You can’t – in good faith, believe they should be set free ! Not gonna happen, bud !

These murderers must never be allowed out and into society again. They’re criminals who took two innocent lives and have proven they will kill at will. To release them into our law abiding society is to risk the peace and lives of every citizen!

First off… I would like to say that Montie and Donald are my uncles. Montie and Donald are not demons or monsters. They are human just like the rest of us are. Everyone makes mistakes and bad decisions in life. Nobody is perfect by far. But people change. This article talks about the bad that they done but doesn’t speak about any of the good. They was so young when this happened. They are changed people. Montie and Donald still have people who love and care about them. I send my condolences to the other party. Tammy you stated “their kind” , what exactly do you mean their kind. Is your family perfect and have never done any wrong? Who are you to judge? Are you the good Lord , Jesus Christ? Montie and Donald deserve a second chance at life. Montie and Donald have people to stand by their side through this as well. No matter on who says what and how much a person tries to put them down nothing will ever change my opinion on how amazing these guys are. I love them both very dearly and so does my children. I’m glad that you all have perfect families that have never done anything wrong. My family is far from perfect because we are human. We live and learn from our mistakes all the time. Nobody’s opinions matter to me because come our real judgment day we don’t have to face or answer to any of you all because none of you all are God. We love Donald and Montie very much!

They may have changed, and no one is perfect. However, not being perfect doesn’t mean you can torture and kill people as a defense of not “being perfect”. Grow a pair by admitting how wrong they were and allow justice to prevail !!!

Roosevelt & his daughter was the kindest people you could’ve met. If those boys would’ve ask him for the $ he would’ve gave it them. They didn’t deserve what those boys did to them. They left 9 children without their mom. I hope everyone sticks together & does not let these two out on parole!!!

I sure hope that all you people that judging them and don’t have forgiveness in your hearts WILL have to answer to it come judgment day..
Donald and Montie both has asked God for forgiveness for their sins been out trouble for years took every class there is to better themselves and if the news paper would do their job right people would know all this instead only writing the bad and make them like they are monsters to this day.

The victims received a death sentence. I personally believe in an eye for an eye. You take a life so viciously as these two did. Never should have been allowed to live much less have the chance of receiving parole. . He continues to be in trouble so he has not repented for his crime. Legal system is not for the victims. We are to busy trying to protect the guilty to give justice

I bet if they were your brothers or sons you wouldn’t be talking all this crap !! You all want to call them demons and murders would you be saying these things if they were related to you ?? They were young when this happen and none of you knew what we went threw growing up as kids , We all Change and we all deserve a second chance even it it was your brothers or son , Not one of you have the right to judge them for what they have done at a young age , and I wished you can see the good they have done since they been locked up , I know each and every one of you have secrets in your past of bad things you have done so you don’t have the right to judge or look down on some one , So when your brother or son does something wrong how will you look at the Situation ? Will it be like you are doing to my brothers or will you be supporting them for a second chance ?

you just read what the papers tell you and the papers DON’T tell the whole truth!! And only tells one side..So every one beleaves what the papers write.
For example I was told that once Wade Queen wrote an article about a guy dying and was dead when the guy was still alive so which to beleave the friend that tells you or the article?

Free my uncles!!!! I’ll stand by Montie & Donald no matter what!!! No matter what they have done and we love them! If the tables was turned & it was one of your family members or a loved one, you all would be the same way. They have grown up alot. They aren’t the same as they was back then, people change and mature. They are wonderful people. They have been great mentors to some young children I know guiding them on the right path so they don’t ruin their life at a young age. I am THANKFUL & PROUD to let each and everyone of you all know that DONALD & MONTIE GUSSLER are my uncles!!!! I love them very dearly and so does my children!!!!! They ARE NOT MONSTERS OR DEMONS! I wish you all could find the good in people instead of just judging at the bad they have done in life. I would hate to think that you all are so shallow that you all can’t even get past the bad. Montie & Donald haven’t been in trouble in a long time. They have completed so many classes in prison. I often have them talk to trouble kids that I know and give them advice to stay on the right path and not down the wrong road so these kids don’t ruin their life with one mistake. Live Laugh Love! Dont be haters! I love each & everyone of you people even though you all have so much hate built up in yalls hearts!

The people in these comments are pathetic. They’ve been in prison for 35 years. How long do you think it takes for a person to change or be forgiven of their mistakes. Are you sure Roosevelt and Myrtle didn’t get what they deserved? What secrets did they have hidden? Roosevelt was born in 1907. Did in contribute in the discrimination of African Americans throughout his life? Did he ever witness his parents do horrible things? You all have no right to judge these two men when you can’t even accept the crimes and sins Roosevelt and Myrtle committed while they were alive.

I am the twin sister of Montie Gussler and Donald is two years older than me.When this all happen Montie and I was just 17 years old. I miss my brothers every day and every moment not a minute goes by that I dont think of them.Noone knows what we been threw as we were growing up so that is no reason to judge anyone. They doing time for the crime everyone say they committed. While doing their time they have done every class possible to them to better their self. I kno this to be true because I have the papers Montie sent to me and my daughter of the classes he has done.im not here to pass judgement of how you all talk about my brothers .I’m here to say people do change and no matter who you are or what you have done in life and this isnt just toward my brothers its toward each and everyone of us.We all deserve a second chance if or when we do wrong. How many of you that calling my brothers evil or demons would be saying those very same words about someone you love if one or more of your love ones ended up in prison? Would you be saying something else if it was your love ones I bet ya you would be just like we are standing up for your love ones.My brothers have loss loved ones while they been locked up and not even being able to say good bye to lost of them. They have done their time i say let them out so we can spend time with them before it’s our time to go. Just like you would be saying the same thing if the table was turned and you was in our shoes..That’s what wrong with people today always see the worst in people .have anyone ever try to reach out to my brothers to see what they are really like ? They are not monster or demons they are human just like you and I .

Here is something for the ones who dont believe in forgiveness wouldnt you want forgiveness if it was your family or love one ?
“Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven” (Matthew 18: 21-22). Forgiving is hard, but doing it over and over again can seem impossible. But, with God, anything is possible. Jesus is clear in this passage that there is no “final straw” that warrants us withholding our forgiveness. God doesn’t have a “final straw” for us. To be clear, this doesn’t mean allowing others to take advantage of your forgiveness. God also gave us the ability to be reasonable and make smart choices with our lives. Holding on to resentment only takes our joy, while doing no harm to the other party. We should forgive repeatedly because God commands it and He knows what’s best for our lives.

I find it kind of funny how people can believe everything they hear and see. These paper cant even spell the names right or ages to boot .so am I to believe that Montie is spelled Monte and that we are 57? As it is written here ? I think not ! So please when you write a article get things right instead of haft asking it .My twin brother name is Montie not Monte and we are 52 not 57! My brother deserve atleast getting things right that’s wrote about them .So many stories been told so which are we to believe is true? Why keep adding onto it? Why is it people always hear the bad in which a person has done but yet they cant even print the good ? I have a grandson that has anger issues and both of my brothers have taken to him to put him on the right path so he will not end up in prison like they have done…where that at in the papers where in the paper is where they have done classes to better their self ? Seems to me all the paper wants to print is the negative and never the positive in which a person have done. The way this world is going we need to hear about more of the goodness in a person instead of the bad .show some compassion because everything isnt appear as it seems. I will always stand beside my brothers with my head held high for people can change and they are not the monsters that people seem to think they are. I love my brothers with all I have and I would trust them with my life my children and grandchildren life as well .as well as you would do with your own family.

It’s great that they have family to stand behind them but none the less they killed my Aunt in cold blood! You say they have changed but you have no clue what they will do if they are released! Sure you miss them but do you seriously think we don’t miss my Aunt? Because of them I will never get a chance to see her again but I should feel bad for their family? In no way do I think I’m God but I do think justice should be served and they should be behind bars for the rest of their lives! At least you can go see them in jail but they took away any chance we ever have to see her again! GO ahead and keep talking like they are such great people but remember that great people don’t land behind bars bc they are innocent! They done this to themselves and I pray to God they are never released! Our family will always stand together and speak up for Myrtle every chance we get! The only justice we have is keeping them locked up as long as they live! They deserve no better than they done to her but bc we aren’t like them we just have to depend on the system to serve justice

I would bet my life that my brothers have changed ! Because I know they have and noone can tell me they have not ! Just because they been locked up does not mean they didnt change. You all got so much HATERED that nothing anyone say will change your mind about anything.we kno how it feels to have someone in our family murdered so dont say that we dont kno how you feel cause we do .but I refuse to hang onto all the hatered because I wanted to move on with my life and to move on you haft to let go of the past.so say what you might my brothers Have asked for forgiveness and I truely believe god has forgiven them. So I pray maybe one day all the hatred you feel will oneday be replaced with love. I still would love to see my brothers free because god knows and I know they have changed for the better .

I have been sitting here for the past month reading these comments. I have tried to think about what I wanted to exactly say about them while being civil. I am at the point where I do not care about that any longer.
First, Montie and Donald are the lowest of scum. These MONSTERS brutally MURDERED my Grandparents.
They did not care about their lives nor the effects that their barbaric acts would have on our family. For this, I will never forgive them!
Now, the family is on here saying “forgive them”, well I’m not Jesus Christ and I’m NOT in the forgiving business! You can say all you want that they have changed, but not once in 35 years have they offered an apology for the murders!
You say that our lives are full of hatred, I’ll admit it – I HATE the two pieces of trash that did this and I pray daily that they are dragged to the lowest parts of Hell when they die and are tortured for all eternity! Do I care what the murderer’s family thinks about me saying that? NO I do not, because it’s obvious they do not care about the torture our family goes through daily because of what these monsters did!
You say “they’re human” and “they were young when they did this”. Any real human wouldn’t have even considered murdering two of the most loved people! I don’t care how young they were – they made a decision!
I even read a comment saying “you don’t know what we went through growing up” like that is supposed to be an excuse. I know several persons who lived a life of poverty, abuse, etc. and do you know what they did? They made up their minds to be a better person than those who did that to them! They didn’t use that excuse as a crutch to go out and murder people in cold blood!
So there is how I feel about them! I cannot wait for the day that I see that the two worthless POS MONSTERS that did this to my Grandparents have died!

I’m sure if my brothers had a way to teach the family they would had apologize by now. I’m sorry your family had to suffer but we suffer as well. I’m not making up excuses for them and I really am sorry for what happen. How can my brother go about apologizing to you all when they have no address nor names ? That kind of hard to do. You can say what you want I kno they are sorry for what they done because they had told us so. I kno that don’t help any I just wanted you to know .
