NEW LAWRENCE COUNTY CONSTABLE 3 DISTRICT NAMED TO REPLACE DANIEL CASTLE, WHO RESIGNED AT THE END OF 2020, TO JOIN SHERIFF JACKSON’S FORCE AS A PAID SPECIAL DEPUTY

JANUARY 14, 2020 – written by WADE QUEEN

The Lawrence County Sheriff Department has recently expanded via the hiring of new deputies, which has led to the largest number of deputy sheriffs at any time in Lawrence County Sheriff Office existence.

As of this week, the Lawrence County Sheriff Chuck Jackson and his office now has ten (10) deputies working  consisting of eight paid deputies, and two special deputies. In addition, there are six (6) court security officers working for Sheriff Jackson’s office at the Lawrence County Judicial Courthouse Building.

There have been two new deputies hired and just started this week, as well as two former Lawrence County constables hired as special deputies in the last few months.

Daniel Castle, who was the Lawrence County District 3 Constable, resigned in the fall of 2020, to be hired as a special deputy. There was no report on the pay he or any of the other special deputies receive.

A new District 3 constable was named to replace Daniel Castle, that being Jeff McCarty. Lawrence County District 3 covers the Blaine, Webbville, Martha, and Lowmansville areas of Lawrence County.

The other two new deputies who were hired just started their first day on the job on Monday of this week were Tyler Laney and Travis Music.

The names of the current ten Lawrence County deputies are: Mason Keefer (who is the senior deputy), Dwayne Bowen, Everett Chase Kirk, Julius Musick, Joseph Wojtowicz, Joe Osborne, Tyler Laney, Travis Music; along with special deputies Daniel Castle and Paul Wells.

Special Deputy Paul Wells

Paul Wells, who was the Lawrence County District 1 Constable for many years until last year, when he also resigned, after moving to a different part of Lawrence County, making him ineligible to continue on as constable. That position remains unoccupied and will be until at least the next county election in 2022, due to what Lawrence County Clerk Chris Jobe explained is due to no one filing to run for the open seat, as well no one showed any interest before in the run up to last year’s election who could have otherwise been appointed.

The six court security officers of the Lawrence County Sheriff Department are: Rodney Lycans, Karl Adkins, David Wallen, Melody Salyers, Joe Castle, and Clayton Sherman.

It now appears that the Lawrence County Sheriff Department is loaded up with law enforcement officers, whenever (and if) the coronavirus epidemic goes away, or least goes back down in a major way, Sheriff Jackson and his deputies will be able to ramp up in the not too distant future to fully engage in their crime interdiction throughout the county.

There was no word on where the additional funds to pay the deputies will come from.

The reason for the “Special Deputies”, is the sheriff doesn’t have to send them to the police academy. As to where the money comes from, it’s the taxpayers pockets. If the sheriff is gung ho to get going AFTER the virus lets up, he should look across the river at Wayne County WV, Sheriff Thompson who has been going all along. You might ought to look at someone else for LC sheriff in 2022, this one doesn’t shine to bright. Just my opinion.

To clarify, deputy Wells and I receive no compensation for being a special deputy. We serve at no cost to the taxpayers. I’ve been ask for years as to why I risk what I do for free. It goes back to a core philosophy that’s driven me most of my adult life-Bad guys need punished and the innocent need protected.

Daniel, I appreciate all you have done for this county. Your work as a constable has been impressive. I don’t know you personally, but for years, I have been in hopes that you will run for sheriff someday. I’m almost certain you would be elected and I believe you would be the best sheriff we’ve ever had in this county.

OK, let me rephrase it; special deputies DO NOT have to go to the academy whether paid or not. Now to my own philosophy, I think ANY law officer who has the power of arrest should be trained. BTW as constable didn’t you get a small monthly salary? I know you get paid to serve papers (as a constable), and many KY constables do make a fair amount doing so. I also know the salary I mentioned varies from county to county, and some counties have none. I also think experience is a big thing although in today’s world training is more important than it once was. I was a sworn peace officer with and without. To be honest I’ve seen you grandstand a bit in this paper Danial, and like any other person, myself included there is often a mist between bad and innocent. If you were the hero as you seem to imply why didn’t you arrest the old guy you said threatened your life? People often run their mouth, is that a reason to send them to prison? I hope not.

Charles quit your whining – are you a grown man? Jeez – OK you don’t like Chuck and have made that clear over and over and over and over. The man has done a great job but you worry yourself to death over it. Do you have nothing else to do?

I have as much right to my opinion as you do Loretta! I have nothing personally against Chuck, just don’t see much out of him. You seem like the whiner. I’ll say what I want, as you are free to do.
