New digitally printed, flat surfaced license plates are in and ready to make their debut on Kentucky vehicles.
According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, they had planned on releasing these digital plates in late 2020. However, since license plates are manufactured by Kentucky Correctional Industries (KCI) at the Kentucky State Reformatory, production was put on hold due to the COVID -19 pandemic. KYTC made the decison to introduce the plates ahead of schedule.
Transportation Secretary Jim Gray, says that with digital technology production and issuance of the plates will be more efficient for county clerks and vehicle owners.
KYTC says that plates will still be manufactured at the Kentucky State Reformatory but Intellectual Technologies Inc., vendor of the new productiion equipment is temporarily taking over production from KCI. With this new digital technology, KCI will be able to print and ship the plates directly to the county clerks offices.
KYTC says that these place will gradually replace older plates. KYTC goes on to say that there is no change in procedure for vehicle owners and that fees for the plates will remain the same.
