After Pretending to Cut Ties, Democrat Politicians Paid Crooked Consultant more than $39,000
Frankfort, KY – Despite promises from House Democrat leaders to cut ties with a consultant from a corruption scandal resulting in prison, fines, and probation for prominent Democrats, several of the party’s lawmakers continue to pay tens of thousands of dollars for his campaign services.
“This is another sad example of the dirty politics we’ve unfortunately come to expect from Frankfort Democrats,” Republican Party of Kentucky spokesman Mike Lonergan said. “When it comes to corruption, Democrats will say one thing and do another. From bribery to illegal campaign cash and more, Democrat Party politicians show over and over again that they can’t be trusted.”
This consultant was a centerpiece of a scheme to funnel more than $200,000 in illegal campaign cash to disgraced former Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes. Former Democrat Party chair Jerry Lundergan was recently sentenced to 21 months in federal prison. Prominent Democrat consultant Dale Emmons was also sentenced to fines and probation. Jonathan Hurst, Grimes’ campaign manager at the time, testified to receiving bags of cash in his couch, as well as a check from Lundergan.
The Republican Party of Kentucky first brought the scandal to light by filing a complaint with the Federal Election Commission in 2014. This latest Democrat corruption scandal follows Gov. Andy Beshear’s former top deputy Tim Longmeyer, who is currently serving a 70-month sentence for bribery in a kickback scheme.
