Dawgs down Newport Catholic in first round of ‘Classic’
Lexington, Ky. — Top 5 rated Louisville Trinity, a power out of the 7th Region shot 12-16 from the three point line in the first half to build a 28 point lead at halftime and held on to beat Lawrence Co. 92-82 in the second round of the Traditional Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic on Sunday.
Trinity outscored the Dawgs 34-10 in the second quarter behind Lucas Burkman who hit 5 three pointers in the first half.
Lawrence Co. ( 10-2 ) came out with new energy in the third quarter and outscored the Shamrocks 31-15. LC cut the lead to seven in the fourth quarter but could get no closer as Trinity closed the game out at the free throw line.
The Dawgs placed all five starters in double figures but it wasn’t enough. Robert Dalton led the Dawgs with 26 points on 8-16 shooting including 3-6 behind the arc. Brandon Richardson had 17 on 5-11 shooting, hit 3 threes and had 6 boards. Timmy Dalton had 16 points, nine rebounds, and 5 assists. Grant Kiser had 13 points on 6-12 shooting, and Austin Chaffins had 10 points and 5 assists.
Lawrence Co. was 30-68 from the field, 9-28 from behind the arc and 13-16 at the line. Trinity was 32-53 from the field, 15-24 from three, and 13-18 at the line.
The Dawgs will move into the Consolation Bracket and will face Lawton Chiles, Fla at 12:30 today.

“… Trinity had one great quarter and buried us. We realized at half they were going to make threes no matter what we did so we tried to turn them over and speed them up by pressing we figured our press out. Can’t simulate situations like this in practice, great experience for our guys and I’m so proud of them for showing heart.”

On Saturday in the First Round of the Traditional Bank Classic, Lawrence Co. improved to 10-1 with a 84-76 victory over 9th Region power Newport Central Catholic ( 6-2 ).
The Dawgs were down 35-34 at halftime but outscored the Breds 51-42 in the second half and salted the game away at the free throw line.
Austin Chaffins hit 13-13 from the charity stripe and had 22 points in the game as the team went 24-30 from the line.
Robert Dalton led the team in scoring with 24 points and pulled down 7 boards. Timmy Dalton had a double double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Grant Kiser and Brandon Richardson had 9 and 7 points respectively.
LC shot 28-57 for the game and made 4 three pointers on 13 attempts. Ben Weyer led NCC with 18 points. The Breds were 29-64 from the field, 11-28 from three and 7-9 from the line.
