Dawgs ultimate Goal is Rupp Arena…
Louisa, Ky. — The Lawrence Co. Bulldogs are coming off a 60th District Championship and finished Runner Up to Johnson Central in the 15th Region Tournament.
For most teams that would have been a great year, but for this group it left a bad taste in their mouths.
This group has been together for four years and this will be the last go around for seven seniors. Lawrence Co. has never won a Region title and played in the State tournament. This year’s team is looking to play in Rupp Arena and will come into the year as the 60th District and 15th Region Preseason Favorite so the Dawgs will have a target on their backs all season.
Head Coach Travis York will be in his 2nd year after the Dawgs went 19-13 last year and his Bulldogs will return all five starters who averaged double figures in scoring last year.
Junior Timmy Dalton was the leading scorer and rebounder at 22.7 and 7.8 boards per game, senior Robert Dalton 19.7 and 5.6 rebounds, senior Brandon Richardson 17.5 and 6.6 rebounds, senior Austin Chaffins 11.9 and 4.7 rebounds, and rounding out the starting five will be senior Grant Kiser at 10.9 and 3.9 boards. All five players have scored at least 1,000 points in their careers.
Coming off the bench and providing depth for LC will be seniors Tanner Black, Matt Ratliff, and big 6’5″ Josh Ratliff who missed last year because of an injury. Junior Shawn Moore and sophomore Alex Gilliam will also see action on the floor.
Lawrence Co. will continue to play fast paced and press from one end to the other. This team is not very big overall so they will have to team rebound and use their quickness. The Dawgs will look to improve in all aspects this year. LC averaged 80 points per game but gave up 72 per game. The team shot 48% from the field , 34% from three point line and 67% from the foul line last year.
Lawrence Co. will play a challenging schedule that will get them ready for the postseason. They have four tournaments on tap for this year. Hi Tech Signs/Graphix Holiday Tournament at Prestonsburg, US Bank Mike Murphy Classic at Mason Co., WYMT Classic at Knott Co. Central, Traditional Bank Classic at Lexington, plus Boyd Co. Shootout and Huntington Prep Invitational at the Big Sandy Arena.
The Dawgs will open the home season vs. June Buchannon on Dec. 11. Gametime 7:30 pm.
Lawrence Co. Head Coach Travis York…
” …Little bit different in a lot of ways for us this year, in the past we could sneak up on teams but now everybody knows who we are, this team is getting a lot of attention from coaches and media around the state as far as rankings go. We’re going to get everybody’s best shot.”
“Our experience will help us. These guys have played a ton of games together, everybody is on the same page and have the same goal. Our schedule is going to be a grind just like last year.”
“Anything I can do to get us prepared for postseason I will. Some tournaments we may play 3-4 days in a row just like you will at Rupp Arena in the State Tournament. The kids will have another year under my system, we struggled defensively last year, but I expect that to be better this year. Going to be a fun year in Louisa, we are excited to get started…”
Lawrence Co. is my pick to win the 60th District followed by Pike Co. Central, Belfry and Phelps. In the 15th Region I am going with.
1. Lawrence Co.
2. Johnson Central
3. Shelby Valley
