BACK TO THE BASICS WITH YOUNG SQUAD
Louisa, Ky. — Lawrence Co. Girls Basketball will be very young in 2015/2016 after losing four starters from a team that finished 12-18 and made it to the 15th Region tournament for the first time since 2010 last season. LC finished runner up in the 60th District after stunning Pike Co. Central in the first round after dropping both regular season meetings to the Lady Hawks. The Lady Dawgs lost a close one to Belfry 47-44 in the District Championship game. In the opening round of the 15th Region Tournament the Lady Dawgs fell to Prestonsburg.
Fast forward to this season: Head Coach Melinda Feltner who is entering her third year at the helm, will have to lean on the only returning starter in Junior Kara Williamson who averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds per game.
Seniors Layken Chapman and Destiny Chapman will also be in the frontcourt. Sophomore Semarra Akers will provide depth inside.
The Lady Bulldogs will have several younger players in the backcourt like 8th graders Alexis Ratliff and Kassidi Cavins along with sophomore Kendra Spaulding, who transferred in from Tug Valley. Sophomores Kylie Maynard and Scylar Bowens will provide depth at the guard spots.
Lawrence Co. is going to look to pick up the pace this year on offense and defense. The Lady Dawgs averaged 52 PPG and gave up 51 PPG last year. They shot 37% overall, 29% from three and 63% from the free throw line. Those numbers need to be improved this year if the Lady Dawgs want to make it back to back appearances in the 15th Region Tournament.
The Lady Dawgs will play a challenging schedule highlighted by a trip to Tennessee to play in the Winterfest Shootout in Sevierville Dec 28-31. Teams from Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky will be there.
The Lady dawgs open the season on Nov. 30 at home against Elliot County. Gametime is 6:00 for B-Team and 7:30 for varsity.

Lawrence Co. Girls Head Coach Melinda Feltner:
COACH’S COMMENTS:
“… Hadn’t been to the 15th Region tournament in a few years so it was exciting to get back to the Expo Center,” coach Melinda Feltner said. “The girls are excited for the year to begin and those girls gained some experience from the Region appearance. The schedule is tough and the Tennessee tournament will be a challenge for us.” Will be young in the backcourt with a couple of 8th graders and a couple of 9th graders so it will be interesting at the beginning.” We looked much better in the 2nd half vs Pikeville in our first scrimmage, in the 1st half kids passed up open looks trying to be to unselfish.” You won’t find a harder working group that is ready to learn and will do whatever you ask.” Pike Co. Central is probably the favorite in the 60th District and Johnson Central in the 15th region this year.” We have our last scrimmage on Saturday vs Allen Central and the the season kicks off next week.”
“…We have adopted Rock Solid as our Motto for the year. My Brother Phillip has always been an inspiration for me as a person and a player. He was a great guy that is missed every day. I drove him nuts this time of year asking him question after question and he answered every one of them. He was always talking about life, if we can take that advice from him we will all be better people.”
