Pirates have won nine straight over Lawrence Co. in past five years

Pond Creek, Ky. — Lawrence County vs Belfry –  It is becoming old hat for these two programs as they meet once again in the Class AAA Playoffs, this time with a Regional Championship on the line. This will be the 10th meeting in the last five years between Lawrence Co. ( 9-3 ) and Belfry ( 12-1 ) with the Pirates winning all nine games and fifteen in a row overall.

The last time the Bulldogs took down the Pirates was in 2002 by the score of 30-6.

This is a totally different Lawrence Co. team then years past and that showed when the teams met at Belfry on Oct 9th when the Pirates had to come from behind to beat the Dawgs 27-23 on a late 53 yard touchdown by Xondre Wills to break the hearts of the Lawrence Co. faithful.

Belfry has won back to back Class AAA State Championships and played in five straight State Title games overall. The Pirates have knocked the Bulldogs out of the Playoffs four straight years as well. Legendary Belfry Head Coach Phillip Heywood picked up his 400th victory last Friday when the Pirates took down Russell 42-12.

Belfry is a running team racking up 3,565 yards on the ground and only 400 in the air so far this season. Senior Xondre Willis is the leader with 951 yards on the ground and 12 TD’s, Junior Andrew Fletcher has 646 and 11 TD’s, and Sophomore Derek Wellman has 512 and 8 TD’s. Junior QB Noah Corbett has thrown for 400 yards and 7 TD’s. On Defense the Pirates are led by Nate Sanger who has 82 tackles and boster a couple of potential Division 1 players on the D-Line in Juniors Cole Bentley and Raquan Horton. Sophomore Place Kicker Austin Woolum has been deadly this year with 57 PAT and 4 FG’s.

Lawrence Co. is playing really well right now with 5 straight wins as their last loss was at Belfry.

The Dawgs let one slip away the last time when they forced seven turnovers by the Pirates but only turned those into ten points. The LC offense has been very good of late. During the current win streak they have scored at least 27 points in each game and went over the 40 point mark in four of them.

The Dawgs have counted on the big play all year long thanks to Senior QB Grant Kiser who went over 2,000 yards passing last Friday in a 45-38 win on the road over West Carter. Kiser’s loves to get the ball downfield to the Dalton Brothers, Senior WR Robert and Junior WR Timmy.

If the Dawgs keep it on the ground it will be Senior RB Cole Mosley, Senior RB Brandon Richardson and Kiser. Senior Place Kicker Micheal Skaggs who nailed a school record 43 yard field goal the last time these two team met has 31 PAT and 3 FG’s on the year.

On defense the Dawgs will be anchored by seniors Luke Schaeffer, Austin Ross, Aaron Roberts and Tyler Horton. If they can force the Pirates to go to the air, CB’s Austin Chaffins and Richardson will be ready.

Should be a great night of football in Pond Creek as the winner will advance to the State Semifinals and will play either Bell Co. or Corbin the day after Thanksgiving.
