Dawgs Win shootout, move on to face Belfry for Region title

Olive Hill, Ky — ‘Survive and Advance’ is the only thing that matters this time of year and Lawrence Co. ( 9-3 ) is advancing on to the Regional Championship game with a 45-38 victory over the West Carter Comets ( 9-3 ) in the Class AAA playoffs last night at Olive Hill.

The Dawgs jumped out to a 24-0 lead and made West Carter play from behind the rest of the way.

Grant Kiser hit Timmy Dalton for a 11 yard touchdown on the team’s first drive and Micheal Skaggs booted the PAT. West Carter drove to the 20 yard line but turned it over on downs thanks by a tough Bulldog defense, and the Dawgs were back on offense. This time Cole Mosley finished the drive off with a 3 yard touchdown run and Skaggs PAT kick was good for a 14-0 lead.

LC’s defense stopped the Comets once again around the 20 and this time settled for a Skaggs 29 yard field goal, his third of the season, to go up 17-0. After a West Carter punt the Dawgs went back to the air as Kiser looked for Timmy Dalton and he made an unreal one handed catch in double coverage stiff armed one defender made another one miss and cruised into the end zone from 50 yards out for a 24-0 lead as Skaggs added the PAT as he went 6-6 on the night.

West Carter got on the board in the second quarter when Braden Brown went in from 1 yard out to make the score 24-6. On the PAT they tried to fake the extra point kick and it was intercepted by Tyler Horton. That would set the halftime score at 24-6 Lawrence Co.

In the second half the scoreboard operator really got a workout as the two teams scoreed four touchdowns in :47 seconds two by each team, first one a 2 yard run by Brown and two point conversion pass to Tristan Moseby, a 42 yard touchdown run from Kiser PAT good, a WC 65 yard touchdown run from Ethan Brown but the two point conversion failed. On the ensuing kickoff Timmy Dalton went 80 yards untouched for the touchdown and Skaggs added the PAT after all of that was said and done it was Lawrence Co. 38-20.

LC’s Cole Mosley got in on the action once again with a 5 yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and it was LC 45-20.

West Carter would not go away in the fourth quarter and battled to the end as they scored the next three touchdowns on passes from Braden Brown of 17, 3 and 46 to Moseby, Chase Hanshaw and Zach Walker but all three two point conversion failed to bring the Comets within seven but after that LC covered the on side kick attempt and picked up two first downs to seal the victory 45-38.

Robert Dalton didn’t get in the end zone but had over 100 yards receiving on the night. The LC defense didn’t play real well but they came up big when it counted causing a few turnovers led by a Morgan Miller strip and Luke Schaeffer fumble recovery plus the Dawgs only allowed one two point conversion after giving up six touchdowns on the night and that was the difference in the ballgame. Lawrence Co. will be playing in the Regional Championship game for the second straight year.

After the win it was time to turn their attention to Pond Creek and a rematch with the Belfry Pirates who beat LC on Oct 9th by the score of 27-23 and the two teams will meet for the 10th time in five years next Friday Night.

COACH’S COMMENTS

” We did what we wanted to do, felt like we could take advantage and we did early on, we didn’t play bad late, had a couple of penalties and breakdowns trying to run out the clock,” LC Head Coach Joey Cecil said. “Give West Carter credit they didn’t quit playing, a lot of teams would have packed it in but give Coach Brown credit. Grant Kiser is well over 2,000 yards and that is record breaking at Lawrence Co. he played well on defense and he’s a great kid and I’m glad he is getting the attention he deserves.”

“This wasn’t how we wanted to finish but we got the job done and we are moving on,” Senior QB Grant Kiser said. (We ) Settled a little bit before half, got to back to what we do. Next week we have to do what we do best and capitalize when we get the chance.”
