WURTLAND, Ky., Nov. 10, 2015 – Supporters of the Greenup County War Memorial on Tuesday received nearly $1,200 in incentives and matching funds from Kentucky Power after installing energy-saving lighting at the site.
Kentucky Power employees who also are veterans joined Kentucky Power President and COO Greg Pauley in presenting the veterans group with a check during a ceremony conducted one day before Veterans Day. The group earned $594 in cash incentives through Kentucky Power’s Commercial Incentive program after replacing their inefficient metal halide dusk-to-dawn lights with energy-efficient LEDs. Kentucky Power matched the incentive for a total award of $1,188 to the veterans group, which relies solely on private donations to operate the memorial.
“We really appreciate how Kentucky Power has helped us with this project,” said Jim Timberlake, a Korean Army veteran and chairman of the memorial. “We already are seeing great savings on our electric bill.”
The new lights have reduced the group’s average monthly electric bill from about $120 to $55, said Keith Hammond, the group’s vice president who served in the Air Force from 1994 to 1998. Overall, the group is projected to reduce energy consumption by about 4,553 kilowatts a year and save more than $400 on its annual electric bills totaling about $1,616.
“We are honored to recognize the hard work of this veterans group not only with incentives they earned through one of our energy efficiency programs, but also with a matching grant to help them maintain this site that remembers the sacrifices of so many,” Pauley said. “We also are proud to employ many veterans and are happy some of them could join us for this presentation.”
The Kentucky Power Commercial Incentive Program has assisted commercial customers, including non-profit groups like those supporting the Veterans War Memorial, in making the switch to energy-efficient technologies. The program offers customers information and recommendations, as well as incentives for installing energy efficiency upgrades. Since 2012, more than 400 commercial customers have earned incentives for more than 500 energy efficiency projects.
