‘Nightmare on the Square’ has many more activities this year…
Halloween week kicks off with 2nd Annual Boo Bash
Louisa, KY — The very popular Boo Bash took place last Monday, kicking off a week long list of Halloween activities in downtown Louisa, KY. The Boo Bash, a costumed 5K Run/Walk now in its second year, drew many participants, despite the damp, rainy weather.
Participants came dressed in Halloween costumes ranging from The Three Blind Mice, which was the winner in the group category, to 80’s girls, bank robbers, and many more. Money raised from the event goes to local food pantries.
The Lawrence County Public Library offered a free showing of ‘Hocus Pocus,’ as well as a chance to paint pumpkins and make carmel apples. Residents of Lock Avenue were encouraged to decorate their homes and yards in a contest, and Mayor Harold Slone had a free pumpkin carving event at the city pool shelter, where participants were invited to place their pumpkins along Lock Avenue to add to the ‘Lock Avenue Lunatics’ attraction…which was quite impressive. The Jack-o-Lanterns were lit up Friday and Saturday nights.
Thursday night, the Lawrence County Square Dancers danced in front of the courthouse, drawing a good sized crowd. On Friday, the ‘Nightmare on the Square’ event really got under way with the first ever Haunted Louisa Ghost Walk Tour, which included a hayride.
A two hour paranormal investigation led by professional investigator, Dr. Ron Enders, into the old jail in the courthouse basement known as ‘The Dungeon,’ took place Friday with a tour at 6:00 and 8:30 pm.
The Maudie May Masquerade Ball, a fundraising event based on a 75 year old real life Lawrence County mystery was held at the senior citizens center which was transformed into an old mysterious ballroom. Masqueraders enjoyed a five course meal, music, dancing, silent auction, door prizes, and heard the tragic story of a local lady who disappeared 1941. A percentage of the money raised from the event will go to the Missing Persons Foundation.
Food vendors were also set up to feed the late nighters, and vendors Saturday included Avon from Renee Ward, Froggy Bottom Candles, and talented local wood crafter, Elmer Pack. Dirty Works Septic Service also came from Martin County to give out candy to trick or treaters, to show this appreciation for the business they receive from Lawrence County.
Saturday got underway with the ever popular Gypsy Moon Fortune Teller who was set up in the Fred M. Vinson Museum & Welcome Center offering palm and Tarrot card readings.
Magician, Mike Comley, performed two shows in Main Street Park, and was a big hit. Other activities taking place in the park included a performance by the Martin County Line Dancers, local songstress, Jodi Perkins, the annual Food City Costume Contest, and a witch/warlock pageant.
The Painted Cow Art Gallery was open Saturday, from 2-8 pm, taking part in the Halloween festivities, handing out candy and offering free hot chocolate and apple cider, as well a a craft for kids.
Ghost walk tours were available again Saturday night and trick or treaters roamed the streets in search of sweets.
Organizers of Nightmare on the Square, who started the event last year, said overall it went well and is growing. They hope to work out the bugs and offer a bigger and better event next year.
