DAWGS FINISH REGULAR SEASON 7-3 WITH WIN OVER ‘CATS

Dawgs will open playoffs vs. Fleming County at home next week

Prestonsburg, Ky — The Dawgs went on the road to close out the regular season last night and came away with 27-15 victory over Prestonsburg ( 5-5 ). With the win Lawrence Co. moves to 7-3 on the year.

LC will open up the Class AAA Playoffs with a home game vs Fleming Co. ( 7-3 ) next Friday Night.

After a scoreless first quarter the Dawgs got on the board early in the 2nd when senior QB Grant Kiser found Robert Dalton streaking down the sideline for a 54 yard touchdown strike and Micheal Skaggs added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

After a well placed Blackcat punt forced the Dawgs to start from deep in their own territory, LC faced a 3rd and 17 when Kiser hit senior Austin Chaffins across the middle. Chaffins picked up a couple of key blocks and zigged and zagged his way for an 85 yard touchdown and Skaggs booted the PAT for a 14-0 lead.

On the next Prestonsburg drive the Blackcats moved to the 16 yard line with 19 seconds left in the first half and faced a 4th and 1. The Cats had to settle for a field goal attempt but drew LC offsides for a 5 yard penalty and a first down at the 11 yard line. On the very next play Bailey Slone found Wes Hager open in the corner of the endzone but Timmy Dalton came out of nowhere for an unbelievable one handed interception and returned the ball to midfield to kill the Blackcat drive and preserve the 14-0 lead for LC heading to halftime.

In the second half Kiser was banged up and missed a series but Timmy Dalton filled in nicely and led a touchdown drive that he capped off from 3 yards out and Skaggs tacked on the PAT for a 21-0 lead.

On the next LC drive with Kiser back he handed off to Timmy Dalton on a jet sweep for a 21 yard touchdown run PAT was missed and the score was 27-0 LC. Prestonsburg got on the board in the 4th quarter when Dalton Frasure scored from 1 yard out and also add the two point conversion to make it 27-8. Frasure found the endzone once again this time on a 16 yard touchdown run and Grant Martin added the PAT to set the final score of 27-15 Lawrence Co.

The LC defense played really well especially the secondary as Chaffins picked off another pass togo along with Dalton’s INT. Prestonsburg will travel to Lexington Christian Academy ( 6-4 ) next Friday to open up Class AA playoffs.

COACH’S COMMENTS

“Prestonsburg is a proud program, well coached, well prepared and we knew it would be a good game,” LC Head Coach Joey Cecil said. “You don’t see it very often in high school football but Timmy Dalton just went up and got it one handed and then honestly I thought he was going to score, but they did a nice job of getting him to the ground. They played hard and Frasure is a very good football player. We focused on Prestonsburg this week and now we will get ready for Fleming Co. on Monday.”
