Inez, Ky — Lawrence Co. Soccer hadn’t lost a Region game since 2011 but that came to a end Monday Night in the semifinals of the 15th Region Tournament vs Johnson Central by the score of 3-1. It was a tough way to end the season for the Soccer Dawgs who finish the year 17-5-1.
Lawrence Co. got on the board barely two minutes into the game when Alice Hudson found Kaytlyn Bowens in the middle of the field and Bowens did the rest to put LC up 1-0. The Dawgs thought they were up 2-0 just a few minutes later but the goal was disallowed because of an offsides call.
Johnson Central tied the game with 8:12 to go in the half when Bekah Preston found the net on the first of two goals for her on the night. Nothing else doing for either team the rest of the half and the score would be tied 1-1.
Both teams would go back and forth with scoring chances in the second half until JC took the lead with 16:04 to go when Haley Burchett scored to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good and make the score 2-1. Central added another goal at the 9:30 mark for a 3-1 lead.
With just over four minutes left LC thought they had scored again but it was also waived off because of offsides. Lawrence Co. would run out of time and the season was over.
This has been an incredible run for Lawrence Co. Soccer the past five years and the five seniors will be missed. Skylar Chapman, Alice Hudson, Catherine Clay, Maelynn Huff, and Kaytlyn Bowens have left their mark and the program is in great shape with several talented players returning. This team has been a joy to cover this year.
COACH’S COMMENTS
“The first offsides call really hurt our momentum because it would have put us up two goals” Soccer Head Coach Paul Chapman said ” It would have put Johnson Central on their heels.” I Told the girls to be proud of their accomplishments, went undefeated in middle school, three regional championships, two elite eights, and five straight district championships and that was in two different districts.” Chapman said It was a tough loss, us coaches and the girls expected to go farther but tonight wasn’t our night.
