The Louisa Police Department would like to introduce everyone too their newest officer a male German Shepard named Kenya.
Kenya and his handler, Louisa Police Officer Jordan Miller, has recently completed training with Tactical Detection K9 in Louisville Kentucky and will be hitting the streets of Louisa in search of drugs.
“Getting a narcotics dog is just one part of our ongoing effort to decrease the amount of drugs on the streets.
“We hope that with more drug arrest and seizure of property that having a K9 unit will pay for its self over time.” stated Chief Greg Fugitt”.
Kenya is trained to detect various types of drugs including, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, opiates and suboxone just to name a few. Money to purchase the $4500.00 canine was taken from seized drug money from past cases.
The police department would like to thank several people that help make this possible, County Attorney Michael Hogan and Commonwealth Attorney Anna Melvin both whom assisted with many drug cases.
Also would like to thank Todd Coverdale for his donation of a kennel and various other supplies which saved the department $1200 in cost, to help get this program started.
Tactical Detection K-9 was recently recognized for their services being used to train the dog that was able to locate a flash drive used in the Subways spokesman Jared Fogles’ case.
