Rotary learns about new diabetes program from health dept…South East Kentucky Chamber reps visit….annual Christmas Party scheduled
Louisa, KY — Vice President, Lindsey Case, opened Thursday’s Rotary Club meeting on October 8th at the First Baptist Church in Louisa. After the opening prayer, Pledge of Allegiance and Four Way Test were said, lunch was served.
Guest speakers from the Lawrence County Health Dept., Carolyn McGinn, Health Educator and Nutritionist, and Ashley Wilkes, RN/Counselor/Lifestyle Coach, spoke to the crowd about diabetes, one of the leading causes of death in the U.S.
One out of every eleven people have diabetes in the U.S. “Of those, only one in four know they have it” said McGinn, “so the disease can advance rapidly.” $245 billion is spent annually in diabetic medical care.
McGinn explained that heredity and lifestyle are big factors in diabetics. There are things you can do to decrease your chances of becoming diabetic. Losing weight, increasing physical activity, and changing your diet all can help lessen the risk of acquiring diabetes. McGinn stressed the importance of exercise, even more so than diet.
“If we just could bottle physical activity,” she said.
One out of three people have pre-diabetes, and will more than likely acquire full fledged diabetes within 3-5 years. Starting Monday, October 12, the Change for Life Diabetes Prevention Program will be held at the Lawrence County Health Dept.
Classes begin at 5:00 pm. Learn skills to lose weight, be more physically active, and manage stress. Only 1 out of 10 people know they have pre-diabetes.
Wilks said the program is effective and encouraged those who may be at risk to attend. Information handouts were passed out to the group. McGuinn and Wilks invited members to participate in a skit demonstrating how glucose and insulin work in the body.
