Turnovers cost Bulldogs win vs Raceland in the mud…
Louisa, Ky — With Lawrence Co. ( 4-2 ) leading 20-18 and the ball in their hands all they had to do was run out the :56 seconds on the clock, but Raceland ( 5-2 ) defender Bailey Walker had other ideas as he stripped Cole Mosley and scooped up the fumble for a 38 yard touchdown to give Raceland a 26-20 victory on a rain soaked Luke Varney Memorial Stadium Field last night.
Just like last year turnovers proved costly for Lawrence Co. as they turned it over four times. On the first drive for Raceland the Dawgs defense forced a punt which bounced off a LC blocker and the Rams recovered at the 16 yard line. A few plays later Nathaniel Davidson cashed in the miscue for a 5 yard Ram touchdown and a 6-0 lead for Raceland.
The Dawgs took the lead a few minutes later as speedy WR Timmy Dalton, who was playing his first game since Montgomery Co. because of injury, raced in from 49 yards out and Micheal Skaggs added the extra point kick for a 7-6 Bulldog lead.
After the Dawgs forced another punt, Dalton was at it again this time from 65 yards out, but the extra point kick was wide left and the score was 13-6 LC.
Late in the first half Lawrence Co. was facing 4th and five from around midfield when the snap went over Grant Kiser’s head and Raceland recovered the ball and the Rams were in business once again. Davidson made the Dawgs pay with a 4 yard touchdown run right before halftime. The two point conversion failed and the score was 13-12 LC at the half.
The Dawgs added to the lead in the 3rd quarter when Cole Mosley found paydirt from 28 yards out and Skaggs added the PAT for a 20-12 Lawrence Co. lead.
The Rams answered right back when Kane Snyder bulled his way in for a 4 yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 20-18.
Late in the 4th with Raceland driving, the LC defense came up big forcing a fumble and took over with 56 seconds to go in the game. LC needed to run at least one play before they could kneel down and let the clock run out because Raceland had two timeouts. The Dawgs called a safe running play and Mosley tried to fight for extra yards when the Raceland defense made the play of the game and scored on the fumble recovery, Davidson added the two point conversion run to set the final score of 26-20.
LC had one final shot with 35 seconds left but Dawgs QB Grant Kiser was intercepted. Raceland took full advantage of the sloppy conditions to slow down the LC speed.
Lawrence Co. will begin District play when they travel to Belfry next week. Raceland will be off before they begin District play when they host Fairview Oct 16th.
“Game we play, emotional game it’s a roller coaster,” LC Head Coach Joey Cecil said. ” They got a drive going and we force a turnover and think we got it. We thought we made a good call and the kid loses the ball. Emotions go the other way, thought we battled to the end. Close game you beat yourselves more then the other team does.”
