WATCH FOR SCAMS!
Sheriff’s Department Warns about ‘IRS Scam’ and ‘Humana Scam’
The Lawrence County Sheriff Department are warning residents about an identity theft scam targeting people with so-called threats from the IRS, according to a press release
The agency reports it has had several calls from people saying they have been threatened with arrests and/or lawsuits for supposed nonpayment of back taxes.
There also have been multiple complaints about calls from people claiming to be with Humana Insurance. It requests that the person who is called call back to a different number than the one that appears on caller ID — to verify that they have the correct information on file.
Deputies say both are scams targeted at obtaining personal information for use in identity theft
No one should give out personal information over the phone if they are not 100 percent sure whom they are speaking with. Any agency that you do business with should already have your information and should not need you to verify it over the phone.
