LAWRENCE COUNTY POULTRY JUDGING AND AVIAN BOWL
August 21st turned out to be another exciting day at the Kentucky State Fair for the Lawrence County 4-H poultry judging and avian bowl teams. After two and a half months of studying, several fundraisers, and 9 long hours of competition, ALL Lawrence County participants received blue ribbons in the Poultry Judging contest.
In the junior division, Raymond Carter was 5th overall, Brock Kessinger was 2nd overall and Jacob Kessinger placed 1st overall. In the senior division, Virginia Conn received 5th overall and Reserved Grand Champion, Becky Carter was 4th overall, Racheal Carter was 3rd overall, and Caleb Curry placed 1st overall. The top 4 placements will get to compete and represent Kentucky at the National Competition in November.
In Avian Bowl, all teams in the junior and senior divisions received red or blue ribbons. Caleb Curry was 2nd overall in this competition as well. Since he is only able to compete in one contest each year, he has chosen to compete with his Lawrence County teammates on the poultry judging team. These kids worked hard and deserve lots of praise for their efforts.
COUNTRY HAM CONTESTANTS AT STATE FAIR
On August 20, Lawrence County sent 7 youth to compete at the 4-H Country Ham contest at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville. Each of these youth received blue or red ribbons and represented our county well.
In order to compete at the state level, these and other youth had to cure their hams for 8 months, show and sell a ham at the county fair, and show again at the State Fair along with presenting a speech on the curing process.
Over 750 youth competed state-wide.
