Remembering Hurricane Katrina….
Poem dedicated to those who lost their lives in the devastating storm ten years ago
They Called Her Katrina…
It was a hot humid August
In old Louisiana
When the winds began to blow in New Orleans,
East to Alabama
The sea raged like Satan
And the flooding rain fell
They called her Katrina,
And with her followed Hell
The warning rang out
A loud category five
Head for higher ground,
If you wanna get out alive
Some heeded to the danger
But so many did not,
Swept into a watery grave
Or stranded upon their sinking rooftops
Some chose to stay
Confident they could ride out the storm
After all, they had survived Betsy,
Thirty-six years before
Some didn’t leave
Having no choice but to stay
Bound to Sin City by chains of poverty,
To drown in flooded Lake Pontchartrain
They knew she would leave death and destruction
As they followed her wicked path,
But no one could’ve ever imagined
The depths of Katrina’s wrath
Such natural devastation this country had not seen
At least with modern eyes,
For Galveston reigned the worst in 1900,
Until the summer of 2005…..
And they called her Katrina
