Louisa, Ky — The 8th Annual Don Brumfield Memorial Softball Tournament was played over this past weekend at Stella Moore Park on Don Brumfield Memorial Field. Don passed away in 2008 from brain cancer.
The Kickin Chickens went 4-0 and outscored their opponents 105-47 to win this annual tournament for the 4th time in 8 years.
Eight teams participated in this tournament that keeps a local man’s memory alive. Don was born and raised in Lawrence Co. and when he started playing Men’s softball at Stella Moore, he and his brother John formed a team called the Kickin Chickens so Don’s son, Bo keeps the tradition alive and puts a team together of local guys plus a few from out of town and they play under the name Kickin Chickens.
The festivities kicked off Friday Night with a HR Derby and Hitting Contest.
Twenty Five hit in the Derby with Rian Spurlock of Huntington, W.Va, beating Carl Blankenship from Rock Hill, Oh in the finals.
Nineteen took part in the Hitting contest with Blankinship beating Bo Brumfield in the final. The tournament kicked off Saturday morning and finished up after midnight. Teams from Kentucky, West Va, and Ohio, plus players come all the way from Tennessee to take part in this tournament each year.
Action Grafix from Huntington came in 2nd with BWH from Ashland finishing 3rd. This tournament couldn’t be possible without the countless volunteers and local sponsors that help out. The Brumfield Family would like to thank all of them.
