An accident at a private racetrack in northern Lawrence County left a man with significant injuries that required that he be flown out to an area hospital.
The Big Sandy Fire Department and Net Care EMA responded to a motor cross track on Quarry Branch Road, off of Brushy Fork Road, a few miles from Route 707, at around 4 P.M. Sunday after a call was made to local 911 reporting an accident at the track.
Details were scarce about the circumstances of the racing accident, but it was apparent that the man, whose identity was not released; reportedly sustained injuries that were serious enough that rescue officials made a call for a air medical helicopter evacuation.
Emergency officials scrambled to set up a landing zone for the helicopter, by briefly blocking off all four lanes of US 23/Route 707 near the Boyd/Lawrence County line, at a median intersection of 23 so that the air ambulance would have enough smooth asphalt blacktop to safely land.
The injured patient was transported by ambulance to the waiting helicopter, and and he was airlifted to an area hospital
There is no further word on what injuries or what is the current condition of the racing driver at this time.
