ACTC Has New Aviation Program
Do you want to fly airplanes? Studies suggest almost 500,000 pilots are going to be needed over the next 20 years.
An Ashland Community and Technical College partnership with Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) makes the nation’s first FAA-approved “1,000-hour power” 2+2 degree pathway to aviation careers available to area students. The partnership leads from an AA degree at ACTC to a Bachelor of Science Degree at EKU in Aviation – Aerospace Technology Concentration.
Graduates of the aviation program are prepared for jobs with all major airlines, all regional airlines, many foreign airlines, aviation charter companies, all five US military services with aviation elements, and corporations that own their own airplanes
ACTC was one of four Kentucky Community and Technical Colleges selected for the EKU program partnership because of its proximity to an airport and the college’s interest in adding aviation coursework opportunities for students.
In 2013, the FAA granted special authority for EKU Aviation-Professional Flight baccalaureate graduates to take the Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (R-ATP) check ride at 1,000 total flight hours, instead of 1,500 hours.
The FAA recently added EKU’s Aviation-Aerospace Technology (AT) degree to its federal register of approved “1,000-hour power” degrees. With this most recent FAA approval, ACTC students in the EKU transfer agreement can complete their FAA private pilot through instructor pilot certificates and ratings, their associate degree, their bachelor’s degree, and simultaneously earn their 1,000-hour power certificate.
Students in the 2+2 aviation partnership will earn an associate degree at ACTC where they complete their lower-division college courses taught by community college faculty. Simultaneously, they will take lower-division aviation courses taught by local instructors hired through EKU. Ultimately, they will complete the upper-division baccalaureate degree courses by taking entirely online courses through Eastern.
The bottom line is that ACTC students now have a clear path thorough the EKU aviation program to careers as licensed pilots, with a four-year college degree to further enhance their career opportunities.
Students will be dually enrolled at ACTC and EKU and can start on their general education classes this fall. August 3 is the fall application deadline for ACTC and admissions forms are on the web at: ashland.kctcs.edu. For information on enrolling at ACTC, contact ACTC advisor James Jagielo, james.jagielo@kctcs.edu.

ACTC Financial Aid
People who want to start at ACTC this fall will find that college is more affordable than they might have thought. In spite of news stories about the high cost of college, ACTC and other Kentucky Community and Technical Colleges are holding the line on tuition increases.
In-state tuition for Fall Semester 2015 is $147 per credit hour, the same as last year. This is a much lower rate than available at other colleges and universities in the area. ACTC’s in-state rates are available to Ohio residents of Adams, Athens, Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Pike, Scioto and Vinton counties, and West Virginia residents of Cabell, Mingo and Wayne counties.
Financial aid for fall is available to those who qualify on the basis of financial need, and many ACTC students qualify. Once you’ve completed the admission process and are in degree, diploma or certificate status, you can apply for financial aid.
The main forms of aid for ACTC students are the Federal Pell Grant which generally does not have to be re-paid and Federal Work study which pays students at least the federal minimum wage for jobs on campus.
The “Free Application for Federal Student Aid,” the only form required for most federal and state aid programs, is online at fafsa.gov and ACTC forms are available at: ashland.kctcs.edu.
To apply for financial aid as a new student, individuals must have completed the admission process and be in degree, certificate or diploma status. Applicants must also be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen and be registered with the Selective Service as required.
For questions on the FAFSA, financial aid assistance or a tuition payment plan, call 1-855-246-2282 or go to http://ashland.kctcs.edu/help.
Federal and state education benefit programs for veterans and eligible dependents are coordinated through Veterans Services. Our office will assist you with your application for benefits and certify your enrollment to the US Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Processing Office. For help with aid to veterans, call 606-326-2275 or email Craig Pleasant, Veterans Affairs Coordinator and School Certifying Official, at: cpleasant0002@kctcs.edu.
ACTC Offers Evening Classes
Ashland Community and Technical College is giving busy adults an evening class schedule that can be an alternative to online classes.
Evening classes provide the campus experience to working adults who seek skills and credentials for new or better jobs. Most ACTC evening classes meet just one evening a week, giving students an entire week to complete assignments and study for the next class session.
This fall’s evening schedule includes some of the general education courses required for every associate degree as well as the biological science classes sought by students seeking to enter a health care field.
General education courses at the College Drive Campus are Basic Public Speaking, Intro to interpersonal Communication, Intro to Sociology, History of US through 1865 and Writing I. Biology classes at College Drive are Intro to Biology, Human Ecology, Human Anatomy & Physiology I and Medical Terminology from Greek & Latin. Also offered at College Drive are Entrepreneurship, Computational Thinking, College Algebra and Intermediate Algebra.
General Psychology, Digital Literacy, and Organic Chemistry Lab are offered at the Technology Drive Campus, along with Welding and Carpentry classes.
A complete list of fall courses is on the web at: ashland kctcs.edu. August 3 is the fall application deadline.
