Two Cawood men escaped serious injury on Saturday when a bizarre accident occurred in the Woodland Hills area.
According to Harlan City Police Cpl. Jeff Owens, Joseph Turner, 28, was operating a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado on the road from the Harlan Christian School when the metal gate blew to a closing angle and a rail on the gate went through the front of the vehicle. Jonathan Turner, 24, was a passenger in the truck.
“The Turners had been at the school cutting grass and had decided to go get something to eat,” Owens said. “The gate they had to open to come into the school area must have blown back to a closing angle when they were going back out, causing the metal rail to impale the truck through the passenger side head light.”
Owens said the rail traveled through the headlight area, along the firewall and through the glove compartment to inside the vehicle – pinning Jonathan Turner in, causing entrapment.
The Harlan County Rescue Squad and Harlan City Fire Department were dispatched to free Jonathan Turner from the vehicle. Owens said he had possible leg and back injuries. He was transported to Harlan ARH Hospital by LifeCare Ambulance Service for treatment.
Owens said no citations were issued and no charges were lodged in the incident. He was assisted at the scene by Officer Derrick Noe.
