JUNE 11, 2015
LOUISA, Ky. — City coffers swelled by $150,224 this year and council members and mayor Harold Slone used part of that money for small pay raises for city workers who, Slone said, had not had a pay raise in two years. Some of the extra tax money is being used for other new programs the city has begun working on.
Last year’s budget was $1,576,248 and this year it jumped to $1,726, 472 according to city clerk Kathy Compton who attributed the extra money to the annexation of the 23 bypass area, and a raise in mineral taxes. “The coal severance is down but the oil and gas has been a lot more,” Compton said.
She said the council is hoping to make an extra $20,000 or so next year from the liquor tax which went into effect this year after the city voted “wet’. But mayor Slone said the amount would be closer to $100,000 from liquor licenses and city sales tax.
The new budget passed 5-0 at last night’s meeting which also saw city officials get a chance at a $500 incentive for completing training sessions for a total of 40 hours. But council did not get a raise from the usual $600 per year for all meetings. The mayor received only the usual cost of living percentage raise from the state which is less than $20 a year.
