Bulldogs hang tough but fall short 5-2
Lexington, Ky — The weather felt like March and both teams played defense like it was an early season game. Neither team got to take infield practice because of a three hour rain delay plus nerves led to five errors between the teams as Greenup Co. defeated Lawrence Co. 5-2 in the 1st round of the 2015 Rawlings/KHSAA State Tournament.
Austin Bailey started on the mound for the Dawgs but only lasted one inning giving up four runs only two earned, two hits, one walk while getting one strikeout. The Dawgs commited two errors in the first inning and dug themselves into a 4-0 hole.
Lawrence Co. got two runs back in the second inning but left two runners on.
Brock Turner led off with a ringing double into left center field, Brad Parks walked and when Peyton Cyrus laid down a bunt single the Dawgs were in business with the bases loaded and no outs. Noah Lambert hit into a fielders choice scoring Turner and when the throw got away from Greenup Co.’s Christian Wireman the Dawgs still had the bases loaded.
Morgan Miller lifted a sacrifice fly to score Brad Parks and the lead was down to two runs. That was all LC would get. Greenup Co. scored a run in the fifth to set the final score at 5-2.
Chase Coverdale, who went 2-3 at the plate pitched three innings giving up one unearned run and Josh Cantrell came in to pitch the final two innings. The Dawgs had six hits but commited three errors. Lawrence Co. finishes the year at 23-16 but should return seven starters. Warren Price, Eric Salyers, Josh Cantrell and Noah Lambert.
Greenup Co. Improved to 32-10 and will play Collins Wednesday Night at 8:30.
Coach’s Comments;
“Ball bounced their way early and anytime they get on they are going to put pressure on you with their speed,” LC Head Coach Travis Feltner said. “They put four runs on the board and it was too much of a hole to come out of.”
“We had our chances and our kids battled to the last out was made. Tip your hat to Greenup Co. they played a little bit better then us and are moving on. Our kids stayed relaxed with the rain delay and they were ready to play. We had men in scoring position at least three innings with less then two outs and couldn’t cash in.”
“I have to go talk to our seniors and the rest of my team and they are crushed. They expected to come down here and win. No better place to end the year then right here. It is an honor, only sixteen teams make it and we were one of them. Only one of them is going to end with a win. Never easy to talk to them and wrap up our season,” Feltner said.
