Local motocross riders leaving it all on the track;
LOUISA, KY – Motocross continues to grow bigger each year and Lawrence, Ky has three local riders making names for themselves on the high flying dirt tracks around the area.
Jake Wellman & Cameron Maynard both 15 years old will be sophomores heading into this upcoming school year at Lawrence Co. High School, as for Kylan Ross he is 14 years old and will be an 8th grader at the Louisa Middle School.
All three riders started out as most kids do…have a dirt bike or an ATV and begin experiencing the speed, high jumps, & competitiveness with others around.
This past Tuesday night at the Cabell Co. Fair, the three riders raced along side each other at the Milton Motocross in Milton, West Virginia.
Racers packed Milton that night as 207 came out to participate with money classes on hand along with trophies.
Milton Motocross is run by Ronnie Farmer and a lot help from his crew on the dozers and flaggers.
Farmer had this to say about the race the next day on Facebook, “WOW, what a great turn out last night and some really good racing! Thumbs up to the track crew, ninety plus degrees yesterday and no dust, I hope everyone had a good time. Thanks again to DESCO FEDERAL CREDIT UNION for all the hole shot awards. JOHN NOLAN PHOTOGRAPHY was there taking pictures… check out his website .”
“Andrew and Gavin are headed off to Loretta Lynn’s to represent, good luck to them. Our next event will be Aug. 2, open practice from 4 til 10. We will also be holding an auction for Bailey Jack, gate fee will be five dollars which will all go to Bailey and twenty dollars to practice.”
With 19 riders at the starting gate, Cameron gets the hole shot with Jake behind him in second. Cameron led the entire race and came out with a 1st place trophy while Jake took home a 3rd place trophy in the Open D Unlimited class.
Kylan finished 4th in the School Boy race as he also competed in the C & D Unlimited class. In last week’s race at the Lawrence Co. Fair in Proctorville, OH the three racers were listed as Kylan winning 1st, Cameron 2nd, & Jake 3rd place.
“Cameron started racing with his first race last fall and competes on a Kawasaki KX 250F and since that time has brought home 1 – 1st place, 3 – 2nd place, & 3 – 3rd place trophies. One day soon he plans to ride at Daniel Boone but so far he has been to Milton, Rock Camp (Coal Grove,OH), Tyler Mtn (Cross Lanes, WV), Hickory Hills, & Rolling Rock and credits his parents Dwayne and Tonya for the support and dedication.”
The win on Tuesday night at Milton was awesome and a lot of fun, especially in front of a big crowd….it’s a great place to race,” said Maynard. “Jake has been racing for the past two seasons and he too rides a Kawasaki KX 250F. Both riders (Jake and Cameron) travel together as Jake’s parents, Jeremy and Crystal also put in the long hauls and support of their moto racer. Jake has also raced at Milton, Tyler Mtn, Rock Camp, & Rolling Rock as he has brought some hardwares also capturing 1 – 1st place, 2 – 2nd place, & 2 – 3rd place trophies.”
“Only thing you think about when the gates are full is getting the hole shot and being in the front.”
When the gate drops all you want to do is get around the first corner and take control by being the leader,” said Wellman.
Kylan, the youngest of the three riders, races a 2014 Honda CRF 250R and started racing in October of 2012. Kylan’s parents, Craig & Vanessa, have many dedicated miles as they traveled farther south for some action….Muddy Creek (TN), Wide Open & Hog Heaven (NC) as for the same local tracks as Jake & Cameron….Milton, Tyler Mtn, & Rock Camp. Kylan raced in Chilli Town (Chillicothe,OH) last week and came in 11th out of 41 racers in one event and 13th out of 67 in the next one.
Running out of space in his bedroom Kylan has brought home 21 – 1st place, 7 – 2nd place, & 12 – 3rd place trophies. Kylan’s dad Craig has built a track near where they live called Brushy Fork Motocross and plans to open in the next several weeks if all goes planned. Track location – travel on US 23 to Buchanon, turn onto Rt. 707 fo 2 miles, turn right on Brushy Fork Rd, track 3/4 on left.
Craig can be contacted by phone 606-686-2714 or their Facebook page for more info about location or event times. If interested in Milton Motocross events, Ronnie Farmer can be contacted by phone 304-972-5162, email: email@example.com, or their Facebook page.
