Bulldogs can’t match Central, lose District title game 7-3; Both teams advance to Region 15…
Paintsville — The Lawrence County Bulldogs played Johnson Central Thursday night in the 2014 57th District Championship Game. LC lost to JC 7-3.
The Golden Eagles (27-10) won for the 11th time in 12 games and captured their first district title since 2012. They also won the district crown in 2010 and 2009 — both over Lawrence County.
JC’s junior, Seth Blanton worked a complete game for the win on the mound. Blanton threw 101 pitches, allowing just one earned run on five hits. He also had five strikeouts and walked three.
Lawrence County (22-12) started the game with Eric Salyer on the mound followed by Austin Bailey, and they combined for 3 2/3 innings and six runs. LC had a bright spot in freshman, Trace Bowen, who saw varsity action for just the second time this season. He allowed just two hits in a 5-3 win over Hazard the previous Saturday. Bowen allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings this game.
“I guarantee you [Trace] will be pitching next week in the regional tournament,” said a frustrated Lawrence County Head Coach, Travis Feltner. “If your guys want to throw strikes, they’ll play.”
LC’s bottom of the lineup was unable to get a hit.
“That was the difference in the game,” explained Feltner “They made plays, we didn’t hit.” Center fielder Joe Wallen had two singles and an RBI to lead the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs won the District Championship last year and in 2011, 2008 and 2007. They were the runner up in 2010 and 2009.
JC and LC both advanced to15th Regional Tournament being held at Sheldon Clark High School.
Dawgs open Regional Play with win over Pikeville
The Bulldogs won their first game Monday night over Pikeville 2-0 and will play Belfry tonight in the semi-finals at 8:00 pm. Details of last night’s game were not available today.
The Pirates went 17-7 in Region 15 regular season play.
Johnson Central leads the region with a 19-1 record in Region 15. The Golden Eagles easily defeated Allen Central in the first round 8-1.
Senior, Joe Wallen pitched a complete game shut out and Chase Coverdale was 4 for 4, had one RBI, double, run scored and accounted for both runs of the night.
Morgan Miller, the catcher, stopped the only run Pikeville had by getting Pikeville’s pitcher, Jacob Hamilton, out at home.
Head Coach Travis Feltner expressed his thoughts on the game saying, “I am really proud of our kids against Pikeville in the 1st round of the region. It was a tough draw for us, with them having University of Kentucky signee Jake Hamilton on the mound.”
“Our kids responded well to the big challenge, putting together several tough at bats early. We were able to drive [Hamilton] pitch count up and keep a lot of pressure on their defense.”
Hamilton was taken out in the beginning of the seventh inning.
“Senior Joe Wallen was great on the mound for us as he has been just about every time out this year. He was able to pitch out of a couple of tight situations and keep Pikeville’s offense at bay.” stated Feltner.
“Very Proud of the fight our kids showed and it’s going to take that kind of effort against Belfry in the semifinals.”
LC will be taking on Belfry, Wednesday. Due to weather the game between East Ridge and Johnson Central was not finished and they will finish their last two and a half innings at 5 pm and LC will take the field after that tonight weather permitting.
