Coach says team is ‘a work in progress’;
Lady Dawgs start District play, lose to Paintsville and Sheldon Clark…

Last week began 57th District play for LC’s Lady Dawgs with both Paintsville and Sheldon Clark making the trip to Bulldog Lane. Paintsville made the trip on Monday and took a demanding lead and never looked back in a 56-22 win while Sheldon Clark made their entrance on Friday as LC came to play but came up short for a 41-32 Cardinal win.
“We have an amazing group of girls who work extremely hard to get better everyday. We have a team that is still trying to find their identity as scorers. Only two of my girls have varsity experience and none of them were looked at to do much scoring,” said coach Feltner. “It is going to take us a few games to get together as a team, these girls have never played together. Trust in each other and learning each other takes time. In the toughest district in our region, unfortunately we don’t have a lot of time. We played Paintsville on Monday and our youth and inexperience really came through. This is not a true reflection of my team and I know when we play them again it will be a different game. We came out Friday night and played much better collectively as a team.”
Monday night’s game, stressed by coach Feltner, had no reflection on how her girls can perform. There are nights when a team just has a bad night on the court, this night happened to be LC’s.
The Tigers came out to control all aspects of the game by shooting 47% from the floor and 78% from the foul line to pick up the 56-22 win. LC had it’s troubles throughout the night hitting only 17% from the floor. Junior point guard Shelby Hay led the Dawgs in scoring with 7 points while teammates freshman Kara Williamson and junior Savannah Cyrus scored 6 and 5 points respectively.
Sheldon Clark came to town on Friday night and LC looked like a different team on the floor. Both teams played scrappy, ball hustling up and down the court plus crashing the glass for rebounds. The Cardinals stayed in front just enough to hang on to a 41-32 win over the Dawgs.
LC’s junior center Caroline Clevenger was perfect from the floor hitting 3/3 and going 4/4 from the line to give her a double digit performance on the night with 10 points along with 3 boards. Hay netted 8 points while Fitch and Cyrus each knocked down 7 points in the loss. Sheldon Clark went nearly perfect from the floor as a team hitting 15/17 (88%) on their FG shooting from 2 point and 3 point shots .
“It was a much better game against Sheldon Clark and had we made five easy layups we missed in the first minutes of the game, things could have been different. Now we turn around Tuesday and play the best team in our district, Magoffin Co. who also played for the regional championship last year. These two weeks of games are extremely tough on us,” said coach Feltner. “We are a work in progress and we will get there with hard work and team work. We have talked nothing but hard work, works and team works, works. Those are the things we are focusing on, it will just take some time.
“The seven varsity players receiving the most playing time right now are Shelby Hay, who is taking control of the team and leading them as our point guard. Savannah Cyrus is also stepping up and helping lead the team. Laken Fitch has really stepped up her game as well,” said coach Feltner. “Caroline Clevenger has worked hard to make herself better. We have lots of youth, and inexperience with Kara Williamson who is working hard to make herself better. Kristen Bellomy is a great ball player who hasn’t played in a few years but is improving everyday. Kelli Lemaster has a nice shot and sinks some threes so everyone is working hard to make themselves better….we are a work in progress.”
LC will be back at home to face Magoffin Co. on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Game time 6:00 pm JV and 7:30 pm Varsity.
