‘Team’ effort earns LC boys 4-1 record; down Magoffin and Boyd Co., lose to Breathitt this past week…
Dominating play on offense and defense as a “TEAM” has come together for LC’s boys basketball. This past week the Dawgs, now with a 4-1 record, went on the road to play three tough opponents. LC took down in their first game 57th District rival Magoffin Co. 80-64 on Tuesday night, next came Breathitt Co. on Thursday who handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season 60-63, & Saturday in the Boyd Co. Roundball Classic the Dawgs edged out Boyd Co. 63-62.
“Guys really battled this week. Three tough road games, in each game we had different players step up. Road games are when teams grow and develop,” said coach Cook. “Starting the first two weeks off 4-1…I couldn’t be any prouder. We still have to so much we have to improve on. The next few weeks we will really be tested, looking forward to the challenge for our team.”
Traveling to Magoffin Co. is always a hostile environment for the 57th District to play. LC’s five starters each hit double digits in scoring to walk away with a 80-64 win over the Hornets. Sophomore Robert Dalton led the team in scoring with 22 points on the night to go with 2 boards and 2 steals.
Sophomore teammates Austin Chaffins (11 points), Grant Kiser (13 points), & Brandon Richardson (19 points) had 10 boards, 12 assists, & 11 steals as a trio on the court. Freshman teammate Timmy Dalton netted 15 points with 8 boards and 4 steals. LC shot 13/19 from the line and connected for 50% on field goal shooting from the floor.
Coach Cook’s ball club came out on top in each of the four periods against a rowdy Hornets team.
“Magoffin Co. is one of the toughest places to play in the 15th Region, tough place to win, our guys kept battling throughout the game and never gave up,” said coach Cook.
Thursday’s road adventure took the Bulldogs to Breathitt Co. as the Bobcats had lost their first game of the season to Perry Co. Central. Despite the Dawgs four players in double digits the Bobcats took over and handed LC their first loss of the season with a 63-60 win.
LC took the lead into halftime 28-26 and allowed the Bobcats to take over in the 3rd period. Four sophomores scored in double digits for the Dawgs….Chaffins led the way with 17 points, Kiser had 16 points, R. Dalton netted 15 points, & Richardson connected for 10 points. The Bulldogs grabbed 23 total boards and went 7/12 from the line.
“Coach Cook said, “This was a great learning experience for our team. We had some opportunities to win the game that we have to use as a learning experience down the road. Our guys have to do a better job on the glass.”
Saturday’s game against the Boyd Co. Lions was a 9:00 pm matchup in the Boyd Co. Roundball Classic.
Once again LC put together a “TEAM” effort against a scrappy Lions team to grab a one point win, 63-62. The game with Breathitt Co. coach Cook stressed a better job his players needed to do on both offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The Dawgs did just that by grabbing 36 boards, 13 more than the Breathitt game and went 11/14 from the free throw line.
Freshman Timmy Dalton had a quiet performance on Thursday but turned things around against Boyd Co. conncecting for 20 points, 9 boards, 3 assists, 5 steals, & 3 blocks. Chaffins, Richardson, Kiser each hit double digits scoring 13, 10, & 10 points respectively.
“Our team handled adversity really well and concentrated on rebounding the basketball. This made our third game of the week and very proud of the win and the way the team has come together,” said coach Cook.
LC takes on the Raceland Rams tonight at Bulldog Gymnasium. Game time 6:00 pm JV and 7:30 pm Varsity.
