LC Boys Basketball 2013
“WE WILL”….concept bringing the Bulldogs together…
Bulldogs 2-0 to start season, face three straight road games
LOUISA, KY – The Lawrence Co. boys basketball team want to take this season another step into the playoffs. Coach Cook and his coaching staff have instilled in his young Dawgs squad this season the slogan, “WE WILL” take a step further.
The road that LC needs to be on is being able to out rebound, better defense, commit the turnovers, & playing smart as a team to dominate their opponent. LC brings a young but talented group of players to the court this season. With no senior to be a leader this year, the “TEAM” will consist of 2 juniors, 10 sophomores, & 2 freshman.
LC (2-0) to start this early season has beaten two good teams….on the road to East Carter (83-66) and at home to Pikeville (70-61). The Dawgs will be on the road their next three games to Magoffin, Breathitt, & Boyd County.
Coach’s Quotes: “Really great way to start the season. Extremely proud of our guys…two good wins over two good basketball programs.
Still got some improvements to make but I’m confident our guys will work hard to improve,” said coach Cook.
“Also very pleased with our bench play. Got a lot of guys stepping up giving quality minutes at the varsity level. Those guys are only going to get better as well. We need more vocal leadership on the floor, hopefully some guys will take on those roles.”
The Dawgs were led in their season opening win over East Carter by sophomore Brandon Richardson with a double double, 30 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman teammate Timmy Dalton netted 23 points in the win. As a team, LC grabbed 44 boards and shot 32 for 52 from the foul line. Sophomore Austin Chaffins dished out 6 assists to go with 8 points on the night.
In LC’s home opener against a very good Pikeville team, the Dawgs took control late in the game to come out on top with a 70-61 win. Coach Cook’s team had two players producing double doubles on the night as two other players hit double digits in scoring….freshman Timmy Dalton netted 10 points, sophomore Austin Chaffins connected for 14 points and dished out 10 assists, sophomore Brandon Richardson put up back-to-back game double doubles with 19 points and 10 boards, & LC’s leading scorer on the night sophomore Robert Dalton netted 21 points with 7 boards & 3 steals.
LC had their hands full with Pikeville as they had several players that had height advantage but if you can control the rebounding department in boxing your opponent out and getting those second and third chance shots to score like the Dawgs did in their “TEAM” performance….the season will look good. The Dawgs connected on 13 of 21 from the line, grabbed 31 boards, & hit 9 shots from beyond the arc.
Coach Cook’s team will be focused on “WE WILL” throughout the season and a “TEAM” that pulls together at the end will be on top.
