Dawgs put down Paintsville, SC to take 57th District
championship; play first game of Regionals today…
PAINTSVILLE, KY – After being rained out for three consecutive days to try and start the 57th District Baseball Tournament at Johnson Central High School, the rains let up enough to begin play this past Saturday. Coach Travis Feltner’s Bulldogs had something to prove to the Paintsville Tigers ball club after they have taken the last 5 out of 6 games from LC and also knocked the Dawgs out of the District Tournament last year.
“Toughest week of my coaching career……the hardest thing for a big game is always “the wait” on game day and for three consecutive days we had to wait only to be cancelled,” said LC’s head coach Feltner. It was tough on the coaching staff and I know it was tough on our team, but we finally got to play Saturday with the much anticipated match up with Paintsville and all week we’ve been preaching to our team that we have a lot “to prove”.”
The Bulldogs beat Paintsville and Sheldon Clark over the weekend and will begin Region 15 play today at Belfry today facing Pike Co. Central at 4:00 pm..
LC vs Paintsville
LC put runs on the scoreboard in the top of the 1st inning and taking a 2-0 lead, but the Tigers answered back in the bottom half of the inning scoring 1 run.
The Bulldogs big 2nd inning rallied in 4 runs as junior Adam Cavins launched a shot over the left field fence for a 2-run homer that got coach Feltner and the rest of the Bulldog dugout fired up. Two pitches prior to Cavin’s 2-run blast, the Tigers coach opt to keep his pitcher on the mound instead pulling a fresh arm from the bullpen.
With a 6-1 lead for LC after 2 innings, the Dawgs allowed Paintsville to pull with in 2 runs after 6 innings. LC secured the deal by adding two insurance runs in the 7th inning to claim a 8-4 win over a tough Tiger team.
The Bulldogs had three players with multiple hits as senior Clark Rice, junior Joe Wallen, & freshman Brock Turner each went 2-3 from the plate and scored a run. The trio collected 6 of the 10 hits for LC in the win.
LC southpaw senior Brandon Stevens took the mound for coach Feltner and went 4.0 innings, striking out 3 batters, walked 2, & gave up 8 hits to pick up the win. Wallen came in to relieve Stevens as he took the mound for 3 innings to pick up the Save oppurtunity.
The Tigers Matthew Miller took the loss for Paintsville. Luke Daniels and Brandon Haight respectively had multiple hits going 2-4 and 2-3 in the loss.
“I’m so proud of how our kids responded to the challenge, we talked about coming out and hitting them in the mouth and not being surprised when they hit us back. We knew it’d be a dog fight and that’s exactly what it was,” said Feltner. “Several guys stepped up and played huge roles….senior Brandon Stevens got teh start on teh mound and gave us a gritty three plus innings and junior Joe Wallen finished the game for us. Our defense played very solid, we bent but never broke…not allowing Paintsville to ever put together a big inning. Offensively several guys were big….Clark Rice, Joe Wallen, and Brock Turner all had multi-hit games (Joe & Brock had 2 RBI’s) but probably the biggest blast of the day was a 2-run bomb by Adam Cavins that really seemed to boost us emotionally.”

LC vs Sheldon Clark – 57th District Championship
The Bulldogs turned around after the win and had to play Sheldon Clark for the 57th District Championship after the Cardinals upset Johnson Central earlier in the week. LC jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after 3 innings and never looked back as starting freshman pitcher Austin Bailey shut out the Cardinals on just 6 hits to pick up a 6-0 win as the Dawgs captured the 57th District Championship and move on for a chance to play for the 15th Regional Championship.
SC out hit the Bulldogs (6-5) but coach Feltner’s squad made the most of it when runners reached base to get them to score. Top of the lineup for LC saw 4 of the 5 top hitters get a base hit and while the Dawgs moved runners around not only by contact but LC swiped 5 of 6 stolen bases to get the runners in better scoring position.
“It was tough to have to turn right around and play for the District Championship after such an emotional game against Paintsville,” said Feltner. “Our guys came out and put three on the board in the first inning had three more in the third. We split our pitching up because of the quick turn around for the Region beginning Monday. Freshman Austin Bailey got the start…he worked three innings, sophomore Eric Salyers pitched one in relief, and sophomore Josh Cantrell worked the final three innings. We had four of our players make the All-Tournament Team…..Joe Wallen, Brock Turner, Josh Cantrell, & Adam Cavins in which he grabbed the MVP of the Tourney.”
