Bulldogs baseball improves to 6-0 with wins over Fleming Co. & Belfry;
LC’s baseball team started last week at 4-0 and continued their winning streak with wins over the Fleming Co. Panthers (3-0) on Wednesday and the Belfry Pirates (3-1) on Friday to run their record to 6-0 before back-to-back games this coming week with District rival Magoffin County. Seniors Ryan Kingsmore and Brandon Stevens both picked up their second wins from the mound on the season as Kingsmore defeated Belfry on the road and Stevens took down Fleming Co. at home.
LC coach Travis Feltner has been getting quality starts not only from Kingsmore and Stevens but junior Joe Wallen picked up the win over Prestonsburg in the second game of the season. When Feltner has gone to the bullpen they have buckled down to battle back, pick up the save, or the win as sophomore Eric Cantrell did against Highlands. The pitching staff has been solid so far this season.
LC (6-0) played their third home game of the season on Wednesday night as Fleming Co. (1-4) came to town. The Bulldogs and Panthers went 5 scoreless innings as LC’s Wallen and Fleming’s senior Desmond McAdams had a pitchers duel from the mound.
Wallen allowed just 3 hits and fanned 11 batters and McAdams gave up 2 hits and struck out 9 batters. Coach Feltner called on his pullpen and Stevens picked up his second win of the season going 3 innings, giving up 2 hits, and sending 5 batters back to the dugout on strikes. The Panthers head coach Blake Price brought in junior Taylor Muse in the 6th and the Bulldogs came up with 3 runs on 4 hits allowing LC to get on the scoreboard and buckle down in the 7th inning to secure the win.
Kingsmore went 2-3 from the plate and scored a run as Stevens and senior Skylar Salyer landed on second base with doubles on their lone hits of the night.
“On a cold and brutal night for baseball, junior Joe Wallen came out and dominated Fleming Co. batters for 4 innings, striking out eleven out of twelve batters,” said coach Feltner. “Senior Brandon Stevens came in to close out the final three innngs striking out five more hitters giving us sixteen for the night. Offensively we faced Fleming Co.’s ace Desmond McAdams, we battled him all night and were able to drive up his pitch count and get him out of the game…which is important to our offensive philosophy. Senior Skylar Salyer led off the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff double sparking a big three run inning. Junior Adam Cavins and freshman Brock Turner also had big hits in the inning.”
Friday night LC took to the road to take on Belfry. Both squads were knotted up at 1 run each after the 1st inning but the Bulldogs crossed the plate two more times, in the 4th and 5th innings to go on and beat the Pirates 3-1 on 6 innings work from Ryan Kingsmore. Kingsmore struck out 7 batters, gave up 5 hits, 3 walks, and 1 run on 97 pitches thrown. Freshman Austin Bailey came in from the bullpen to notch the save for LC as he struck out 3 batters in the final inning. Senior Corey Cline went 2-3 from the right side of the plate and scored 1 run. Three other Dawg players reached base as junior Adam Cavins smacked a double and Wallen and Stevens each pulled out singles. LC had speed on the base paths as Wallen swiped 2 bases, Kingsmore and senior Clark Rice swiped one each.
Belfry’s (1-3) head coach kept pitcher Zachary Fields in the complete game to pick up the loss for the Pirates. Senior Zack Francisco went 2-3 from the plate for Belfry in the loss.
“Senior Ryan Kingsmore pitched six innings and freshman Austin Bailey closed out the game striking out the side in the seventh. Ryan didn’t have his best stuff early…..allowing a run on three hits in the first inning but settled in quickly for another strong outing,” said coach Feltner. “Through six games our pitching has been outstanding and we’ve played outstanding defense behind them. We’ve played two errorless games and three more with only one error.”
“If we can continue to build on this, we will have a nice ballclub and enjoy a successful year, Feltner added. “I’m really proud of he leadership of our five seniors…their presence in the locker room, dugout, and on the field has been the single most important factor into our good start.”
