Lady Dawgs smash 3 homeruns in three of the four games to start the season 4-0; Sweep Ashland in double-header on visitor’s field…
LOUISA, Ky. — First year head coach Kenny Horn has his Lady Bulldogs in rare form to start the 2013 season. LC has knocked off some talented ball clubs to start the season 4-0 in the first week.
Last Thursday night the Dawgs began their season on the road traveling to Greenup Co. and beating the Musketeers 6-3, the following night LC played host in their home opener as Perry Co. Central came to town and the Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the season with a 14-0 win in a mercy rule game.
On Saturday, LC played a doubleheader to Region 16 powerhouse the Ashland Kittens on their field and walked away with a sweep to improve to 4-0 early in the season.
Senior Josie Hardin smashed 2 home runs in the 4 games, one against Greenup Co. and the other in the opening game of the doubeheader with Ashland. Junior Samantha Fitzpatrick also went yard in the blowout win over Perry Co. Central.
“It’s always good to start off the season with a win. These girls have worked so hard in the off season to become a better team,” coach Horn said. “The attitude and effort was great for the cold weather. I was really excited for Josie, that was a bomb she hit. I love seeing these kids being successful. The bats have been good in the scrimmage games and Josie tonight. We will have a lot of work to do, but the good thing about this group is I know they don’t mind doing it.”
Greenup Co. Game
Senior Taylor Porter started things off with a single to right field and then stole second base. Porter later scored on a nicely slap to the 1st baseman off the bat of freshman Addy Frazier. Frazier would advance to third but the Greenup defense made the plays to keep Frazier at third to end the inning. After a lead off walk from the Musketeers, Josie Hardin made three consecutive plays to take care of Greenup.
LC got it going again in the third due to two consecutive defensive errors by the Greenup infield. With Frazier and Hardin in scoring position, junior Samantha Fitzpatrick singled to right for two RBI’s. Taylor Porter would lead off the 4th inning drawing a walk, Frazier’s sac bunt moved Porter to 2nd and then she stole 3rd and scored on a passed ball.
In the bottom of the 4th Greenup would get on the board with a lead off single by Howard and 2 LC errors would allow her to score making it 4-1 going into the 5th inning.
Fitzpatrick would take care of the 5th by recording 3 of her 8 K’s for the night.
Hardin led of the 7th with a towering blast over the left centerfield wall to put LC up 5-1. Fitzpatrick followed with a single to right and pitch runner Layken Chapman would score when sophomore Savannah Cyrus doubled to the right center gap pushing the score to a count 6-1 in favor of the visiting Lady Dawgs. Greenup would score 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th making the final score 6-3.
Fitzpatrick was in the circle and pitched a complete striking out 8 batters and walking 1 and scattering 5 hits.
Perry Co. Central Game
The Lady Dawgs continued swinging the hot bats the following night in their home opener against Perry Co. Central. LC shortened the game to 5 innings due to a mercy rule of 14-0. Sophomore Samantha Fitzpatrick came out and took care of business from the mound working 4 innings, striking out 3 batters, and giving up 2 hits. With the bat in her hand offensively she went 4-4 from the plate drilling a line shot over the right field fence and collected 3 RBI’s in the win.
Senior Kristin Caudill went 3-4 with 4 RBI’s. Caudill attempted to run down a deep fly ball hit into centerfield as she went crashing into the fence trying to snag the ball. Teammates Addy Frazier and Mckenzie Giompalo assisted Caudill to get the ball back in the infield as the Perry Co. runner advanced to 3rd base. Caudill wasn’t injured on the play.
“This was a really good effort,” said Coach Horn. “Sam Fitzpatrick was four for four with a homerun. Kristin Caudill had three hits and it was great to see her get going, Savannah Cyrus also had three hits for us. Pitching was a group effort, they only gave up two hits the whole game. Fitzpatrick, Horn, and Bowens did a nice job in the circle. I see this team getting confident every day out on the field. This weekend will give us a great idea where we are as a team.”
When coach Horn swept a doubleheader from Region 16 Ashland on Saturday, 5-2 & 8-7, his Lady Dawgs knew they were a team that most will be gunning for throughout the season.
“It’s basically the same group of players that struggled to a 9-28 record last year, including two lopsided defeats against Ashland,” coach Horn said.
Fitzpatrick picked up the win in game one and the save in game two after allowing eight free passes to first and 5 hits in the first game. In the 3rd inning, LC’s four slot batter Josie Hardin hit a 2-run homer over the centerfield fence off Kittens pitcher Megan Hensley. Hardin has two homeruns in LC’s four games played and gave her team the lead to stay in front for the win in game one.
In game two, Ashland starting pitcher Whitt smacked a 3-run homer to put the Kittens on top 4-1 but LC didn’t lay down as they slowly pounded their way back to tie things up 6-6. The Bulldogs pushed the winning run across in the 7th with two runners on base when senior Taylor Porter hit a single into the outfield.
LC’s 7th grader Ciana Bowens came in to pitch 2 innings in relief to nail down the win.
“I’m in my eighth year coaching, and we have beaten Ashland one other time,” coach Horn said. “It’s still early in the season, but this bunch believes they can do something great.”
