LOUISA, KY – The 2013 baseball season for the Lawrence Co. Bulldogs will include new renovations to the stadium making it one of, if not the BEST high school facilities in the entire Commnwealth. Included in these renovations is a brand new wooden outfield fence, a brick backstop, a huge concrete pad for a picnic area which is handicapped accessible, and much needed brand new bleachers.
Travis Feltner is in his 5th year as head coach for the Bulldogs and expectations are as high as they’ve ever been for this year’s team, having graduated only 1 senior and returning 9 starters. Coming into this season Feltner has put together a record of 92-54, capturing 1 District Championship, 2-15th Region Championships, and 2 State Tourney appearances.
“Our program is extremely excited about the beginning of a brand new season,” said Feltner. “Our kids have worked hard since being eliminated in the first round of the District Tournament last May. We have become accustomed to appearring in the 15th Region Tournament and missing out on that last year hasn’t set well with our kids.”
LC’s schedule consists of 36 games and 16 players that will be taking the field in new uniforms this season. Coach Feltner’s squad is well rounded on defense and offensively as he has 9 pitchers that will be getting a chance on the mound. The Dawgs have speed once they reach base and can score easily with the big bats that come to the plate and the team’s 5 seniors will play a big role in keeping the Bulldogs season together as the younger players will look to them for leadership.
“We have five outstanding seniors and words can’t describe how proud I am of these five young men – (C) Clark Rice, (OF) Skylar Salyer, (OF) Corey Cline, (OF-P) Ryan Kingsmore, and (P-1B) Brandon Stevens. These guys have provided valuable leadership throughout the entire off season,” Feltner said. “I’ve told everyone in the community our seniors have been exactly what they are supposed to be. They’ve been the hardest workers, dedicated to everything we do and all of the talented underclassmen have fallen in line. I’m confident they will lead us on the field and put us back into position to contend for our 4th Regional Championship in the past 8 years, that is our expectation.”
The younger players impressed the coaching staff for LC last season for coach Feltner’s Bulldogs, and the coach expects they will continue to turn heads for the fans and their opponents this season.
“We played a lot of young, inexperienced kids last year that are back with a year under their belts, including sophomore outfielder Noah Lambert and infielders Zach Keesee and Brock Turner. Also look for freshman Chase Coverdale to provide infield depth and another freshman, Morgan Miller to provide some quality at-bats,” said Feltner.
In years past the throwing arms that come off the mound have been a big asset for LC dominating their opponents from the plate. The Bulldogs are well rounded and coach Feltner is confident on whoever he puts on the mound for each game.
“We feel like we have a great balance throughout our program with talent in all four classes (freshman-seniors). We anticipate up to nine different guys to throw innings for us on the varsity level this year,” Feltner said. “Our pitching staff may not have that dominate #1 like a Chandler Shepherd or Steve Blevins, but we all feel we may have more quality depth on the mound that we’ve had in a long time.” (Pitchers include: Seniors Ryan Kingsmore and Brandon Stevens, Juniors Joe Wallen and Adam Cavins, Sophomores Eric Salyers, Michael Williams, Josh Cantrell, and Freshman Austin Bailey and Chase Coverdale)
In the upcoming weeks, the Bulldogs will celebrate 2 of the seniors signing letters of intent to go on and play college baseball next year. Clark Rice will be signing with Muskingum Univeristy – D111 in Ohio and Ryan Kingsmore will be signing wtih Alice Lloyd.
This year’s regular season is slated to open March 12 and again tomorrow versus Prestonsburg at Whitaker Park in Lexington, Ky. on the road. The first home game will be March 15 against Capitol High School out of W.Va.
