TOLSIA STATE BOUND! …beat Hoover in Regional Championship 46-33;
GLENHAYES, WV – In a packed Rebel Arena this past Wednesday night, the Tolsia Rebels played host to the Herbert Hoover Huskies for the Regional 4 Championship game with the winner going to the State Tournament in Charleston at the Civic Center next week. Tolsia jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back as coach Hatfield’s team beat the Huskies 46-33 to advance next week into the State Tournament. Tolsia senior Morgan Stacy led all scorers with 15 points while grabbing 6 boards and getting 1 steal.
Tolsia (17-8) scored the first basket in the Regional Championship game as senior Terry Davis had and easy shot attempt from under the basket. Davis ended the night with 10 points, 3 boards, & 3 assists. Coach Hatfield’s squad continued in the first half to set a steady pace on both offense and defense going into halftime up 31-16. Stacy landed three 3-pointers and scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half. Senior Brandon Clark connected twice from beyond the arc in the half scoring 6 of his 8 points on the night as he had 2 rebounds and 1 block.
“I’m proud of our boys, they played really hard but by no means am I satisfied,” said coach Hatfield. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do on offense and the defensive side of the ball.”
“We didn’t do everything perfectly this evening, we still have things to work on. We gave up only 33 points and I still think there are things to improve on from tonight.”
“On offense, hopefully we don’t do this in Charleston, we have to learn to close out basketball games. We’re struggling right now, we were up big in the second half and let Herbert Hoover get back into the game. Great basketball teams will come back and find a way to beat you in situations that close, and that’s all that’s going to be there next week in Charleston because you just don’t stumble your way there.”
Hoover (14-11) was led by 6’6″ senior Cody Morris with 14 points while senior teammate Aaron Burdette added 8 points in the loss to the Rebels.
Tolsia’s 6’8″ senior Austin Brewer added 6 points in the win but contributed all around as he grabbed 8 boards, dished out 4 assists, picked 6 steals, & had 2 massive blocks.
The second half started out slow for both teams as the Huskies outscored the Rebels in the 3rd period 7-5 and matched them up in the 4th with 10 points from each squad.
Senior Morgan Williamson fouled out in the 4th with 2:23 left in regulation. Williamson added 6 points with 2 rebounds and 2 blocks. With the game out of reach for the Huskies with less than a minute left in the game, coach Hatfield pulled the starters as they got a standing ovation as their last walk across Rebel Arena gymnasium in those Tolsia uniforms.
Tolsia will play next Thursday night in Charleston but they won’t know the seedings until this weekend, Hatfield said.
