Lady Rebels fall one game short of state tournament, lose to Clay Co. in Regional 4 Championship 74-57;
GLENHAYES, WV – This season in the Regional 4 Championship ended the same as last season for the Tolsia Lady Rebels, they fell one game shy of the State Tourament with losses in both to Clay County. The Rebels never once had the lead at a packed Rebel Arena this past Wednesday as they hosted Clay Co. in the Regional Championship game. Tolsia was led by junior point guard Jordan Presley with 19 points while Clay Co.’s Barker led all scorers with 20 points in the championship win over the Rebels, 74-57.
Clay Co. (18-6) jumped out to a 6-0 lead with over a minute into the start of the game, from there the Rebels were playing catch up the rest of the night. Tolsia fans and head coach Ric Morrone hadn’t seen a run in the 1st period like Clay Co. put on them on Wednesday night all season long. Clay Co.’s pressuring defense put the Rebels in a situation by turning the ball over leading into easy baskets for Clay Co. as they jumped out to a 27-8 lead at the end of the 1st period. Clay Co. maintained the floor as they were in a fast break mode that wore down the Lady Rebels as they looked exhausted on the court.
Tolsia (21-4) regrouped as coach Morrone settled his squad down in between periods and set up plays to try get his team back into the game. The game clock ticked down with 5:45 showing (2:15 off the clock) before Tolsia scored their first basket in the 2nd period. Junior center Savannah Winnett put a jump shot in the paint and that’s where the Rebels went on 12-0 run to get back to with 10 points of Clay Co., 30-20 with 2:45 on the clock til halftime. With Clay Co. up 33-23, Winnett once again put the Rebles closer as she launched a shot several feet back from the 3-point arc and brought her team within 7 points, 33-26 as the fans and the “BLUE ZOO” were on their feet. Winnett finished with 10 points & 7 boards on the night. Junior guard Krista Maynard pressured the Clay Co. offense to pick away 4 steals and help take control in the comeback for the Rebels as she finished with 16 points and 1 rebound shy of a double double with 9 boards. The 2nd period is what Tolsia fans are use to seeing out on the court of their Runnin’ Rebels and went into halftime down by 8 points, 38-30.
Coach Morrone’s team came out in the 3rd period and had trouble scoring. Senior Jamie Maynard put the Rebels on the scoreboard with 6:26 on the clock with a shot in the paint to make it 43-32 Clay Co. and Maynard got fouled on Tolsia’s next trip down the court and hit 1 of 2 form the charity line to make 45-33 Clay Co. with 5:54 on the clock. Maynard finished with 5 points and 4 boards on the night and would foul out with under a minute left in the game as she was greeted to a standing ovation from the Tolsia fans in her last game in a Rebel uniform.
Tolsia pulled as close as 10 points to Clay Co. in the 3rd period but couldn’t get over that hump to gain momentum as Clay Co. jumped back out in front by 20 points minutes into the 4th period. The Rebels tried to make a late run and got back within 11 points with 2:46 left in the game as Clay Co. controlled the clock and the ball to grab the Regional 4 Championship as the buzzer sounded with a 74-57 win.
“Give Clay Co. credit, we made some mistakes early and they went up 6-0. Once we got adjusted to what they were doing we got back into the game,” said coach Morrone. “We dug such a hole we couldn’t recover, when you’re down 30-10 and come back and it’s 33-27…..there’s a lot of heart. I told the girls to take some time to get away from it, you finished 14-0 in the Conference and 21-4 on the season. I’m very proud of these girls, we had nine girls and a lot thought we couldn’t do it but our girls never stopped believing.”
