Sheldon Clark knocks out LC and Lady Dawgs basketball teams in the 57th District Tournament;
SALYERSVILLE, KY – This past Monday the 57th District Tournament began for both the LCHS Bulldogs and the Lady Dawgs at Magoffin County. Both squads survived the 1st round action as the Lady Dawgs beat Paintsville 52-38 and LC got by Magoffin Co., 84-72. Sheldon Clark was the next opponent for both LC teams in the semi-final games as the Lady Dawgs lost on Tuesday night, 42-60 and LC let the Cardinals take control of the 4th period as SC came away with a 58-42 win on Wednesday night.
The Lady Dawgs (23-8) came out and played nose to nose with the Lady Cardinals in the first half. The second half is where things got away from coach Roger Harless’ Dawgs. The shots put up by LC never could find the bottom of the net. Senior Taylor Porter who shot nearly 70% from behind the arc in the regular season, connected on 1 of 8 shots against SC and 1 of 4 from the foul line. Porter ended the night by leading the Bulldogs in points scored with 14, but she averaged nearly 25 points per game on the season. Sophomore Savannah Cyrus netted 12 points in the loss as teammate Ashleigh Adkins grabbed double digits on the boards with 13 rebounds.
The Bulldogs shot 29.6% from the floor hitting only 16 of 54 baskets and going 5 of 15 from the foul line for 33.3% and the team grabbed 30 boards in the loss.
Bulldogs lose to SCHS
On Wednesday night LC’s boys basketball team took the floor against the #1 seeded team in the 57th District in Sheldon Clark. Freshman Robert Dalton put LC on the scoreboard first with 2:00 minutes gone off the clock with a 10 foot jump shot. Dalton would finish with 10 points on the night to go along with 4 boards. Freshman Grant Kiser made it 4-0 LC as he drove the baseline and was fouled on the play and made both free throw attempts.
Kiser led the Bulldogs in scoring with 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.
LC (20-11) took the lead after the 1st period, 7-6 but it didn’t last long as the Cardinals came out to start the 2nd period and scored the first 5 points to take a 11-7 lead. SC controlled the lead 15-14 with 2:07 left til halftime. Freshman point guard Austin Chaffins connected on 1 of 2 foul shot attempts to tie things up at 15-15. Chaffins ended the night with 5 points and 4 boards.
With 42.7 seconds left til the half, Kiser squared up from the baseline corner behind the arc and hit nothing but net as the Dawgs took a 18 -15 lead. SC came down the floor with time running out and set up a play and scored to cut the lead to 18-17 to go into the locker room down by 1 point at halftime.
The 3rd period saw the two teams with lead changes several times. Eighth grader Timmy Dalton tied the game at 26-26 with a foul shot at 4:16 left on the clock in the 3rd. Dalton finished with 5 points and 3 boards on the night. With the clock showing 4:09, Kiser took a pass from Chaffins once again from beyond the arc and launched it to find the bottom of the net and give LC a 29-26 lead. The score was tied twice more before the end of the quarter, with 2:25 left at 30-30 and 58.0 seconds left at 32-32.
SC’s Taylor Perry gave the Cardinals the lead 34-32 with less than 30 seconds left. LC senior Blake Prince had a chance to tie things up going into the 4th with a layup, but the ball hit off the back of the rim and the Bulldogs ran out of time to put the shot back up as the buzzer sounded.
The 4th period is where things fell apart for LC. The shots weren’t falling and the pressuring defense by the Cardinals shut down the young talented Bulldog offense as SC outscored LC 24-10 in the final period..
SC (19-9) was led in scoring by Chase Parsley with 17 points while teammate Dylan James had a double double with 12 points and 10 boards.
LC shot 14 of 63 for 22% with 12 turnovers and grabbed 24 boards in the loss. SC was 20 of 38 for 52% with 11 turnovers and 34 boards.
