Lady Rebels win on SENIOR NIGHT for lone senior player Jamie Maynard; end regular season with 19-3 record…
GLENHAYES, WV – The Lady Rebels ended their regular season this past Thursday night with a win over Poca (54-42) which was also SENIOR NIGHT for the lone senior on the coach Morrone’s squad, Jamie Maynard. Maynard ended her last game in Rebel Arena by finishing with 2 points, 3 boards, & 1 steal.
“Jamie’s determination is great and that’ll carry her a long way in life,” said Lady Rebel head coach Ric Morrone. “She’s been with the program for three years. Her sophomore year she was on the JV team, last season seen very little time on the Varsity and waited patiently to come out this season to be a starter. In today’s world it’s a lot about..ME..ME..ME..! She waited her turn, and she’s the only senior on the squad and deserves all the recognition. These things make her a great person and teammate, she wants what’s best for the team.”
Tolsia (19-3 overall, 14-0 Cardinal Conference) finished the season as Cardinal Conference Champions and by defeating Poca went undefeated in the conference. Three junior players scored in double digits as Savannah Winnett led the way with a double double. Winnett dished in 15 points and grabbed 10 boards to go with 1 assist, 1 steal, & 1 block. Jordan Presley led all scorers with 19 points while teammate Krista Maynard netted 12 points.
The Rebels took control in the 1st half going up by 19 points (39-20) at halftime. The 3rd period saw very little points scored by either team with 12 points combined as the defensive side stepped up for both squads. Coach Morrone brought in players off the bench to begin the 4th period being up by 17 points and recieved valuable playing time from each player heading into the Sectional Tournament next week. Starting point guard Jordan Presley fouled out of the game with 4:47 left in the 4th period…..”Jordan had a good game, she does a lot of those intangibles and we need her on the floor. When she’s not on the floor we struggle, her defense is great and has quick hands,” said Morrone.
Poca was led my Hutchinson with 12 points as teammate Ord added 9 points. The Dots ended the season with a record of 7-22 and finished the Cardinal Conference at 3-12.
The Lady Rebels begin Sectional Tournament play this Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Logan as they wait the winner of Wayne/Mingo Central game on Tuesday night.
