June Buchanan gives coach Cook’s Bulldogs a fight til the final buzzer; Bulldogs beat Sheldon Clark by 11…
LOUISA, KY – Coach Cook’s former school where he once coached traveled down to Bulldog Arena this past Tuesday night. The June Buchanan Crusaders, out of Region 14, gave LC everything they wanted and more. The Bulldogs buckled down late in the 4th period to secure a 79-71 win.
Freshman Brandon Richardson led the way on the night in scoring for coach Cook’s squad knocking down 18 points. Lazarus Teny led all scorers in the game as the Crusaders junior netted 34 points in the loss.
LC (15-10) has four games left on the schedule and even if the Dawgs would happen to win out, they would fall one game short of a 20 win season. The Bulldogs controlled the first half going into halftime with a 44-32 lead.
The Crusaders (9-13) came out to start the second half pressuring LC up and down the court and outscored them in the 3rd period 19-13 and down by 6 points, 57-51. With reserves on the bench for June Buchanan, the five starters never left the court as they played the full 32 minutes and came as close as 6 points throughout the 4th period of the Bulldogs.
LC had three more players that hit double digits on the night as freshman Austin Chaffins and Robert Dalton collected 17 and 12 points respectively while 8th grader Timmy Dalton added 16 points. The Dawgs as a team pulled down 39 boards as freshman Grant Kiser went up and grabbed ten of those for a double digit performance.
LC on the season connects from beyond the arc nearly 40% or above but the Crusaders had a hand in the shots by the clutch hitting Dawgs and ended the night with 23.5% and only connecting 4-17.
“It was a good win for us at home,” said LC’s coach Cook. “We didn’t play great but found a way to win. I’m very proud of our kids.”
LC beats District leader SC
The Bulldogs traveled to play District 57 rival Sheldon Clark at Inez last night (Thursday, Feb. 7) and came away with a 63-51 win over the leader in District 57. The Dawgs are now 16-10 overall and 4-5 in District 57.
Balanced scoring was the key to this win that saw five Bulldogs score in double figures. Robert Dalton led the Dawgs with 10 rebounds.
Sheldon Clark 15-8 and 5-3 is now tied with Johnson Central for the top seed in the district tourney. Paintsville is 4-4 and Magoffin Co. is 3-6 with no more district games to be played this season.
