Magoffin Co. beats Dawgs at Salyersville, 73-59; Dawgs come back to down Paintsville at home 76-70…
SALYERSVILLE, Ky. –Lawrence County’s young Bulldogs entered a Hornet’s nest Tuesday night at Magoffin County and came out with a 73-59 loss, but Coach Josh Cook’s young Bulldogs came back to Louisa Friday night and fought off the Paintsville Tigers 76-70 in front of a good crowd considering a snow storm was swirling outside.
In the Magoffin C. matchup freshman point guard Austin Chaffin had a breakout game scoring 20 points including 4 for 8 from behind the arc and also grabbed four rebounds for the Dawgs. Freshman forward Grant Kiser hit for 13 points to go with four rebounds and Robert Dalton scored 11 and also grabbed four boards.
The loss dropped LC to 13-10 on the season, 3-5 in the 57th District with five games to play. The Hornets are 6 -12 overall and 3-5 in District 57.
The Bulldogs came back home and handed Paintsville a 76-70 loss for their 15th win of the season, passing Magoffin Co. for the third seed in the District with five games left. Sheldon Clark sits atop the District at 4-1, with Johnson Central close behind at 4-2. Paintsville is 3-3 and Magoffin Co. 3-5.
In the Paintsville game the Bulldogs placed five players in double figures in a real “team” win led by the dalton Brother, Robert and Tim with 18 points each. Brandon Richardson tied for the team lead in rebounds with Timmy Dalton with seven. Austin Chaffin pulled down 11 from his point guard position.
The Dawgs have just one District 57 game left in the season but it could be a big on as the Dawgs travel to Inez to play Sheldon Clark, currently leading the district standings at 4-1. But the Cards have three district games to play and Johnson Central has two, so a win over SC could possible put the Dawgs in line for a two seed.
