LOUISA, KY – There’s a new sheriff in town for the most points scored in either boys or girls basketball at Lawrence Co. High School.
LC senior Taylor Porter, who has signed a scholarship with Div. I Murray State University, set a school record for most points scored in a game on Tuesday night with a 83-30 win over the Piarist Knights knocking down 47 points at Bulldog Arena.
The previous record was 44 points set twice by former Bulldog Steven Driver. Porter hit 40 points earlier in the season against South Floyd.
According to KHSAA, Porter was ranked 8th in the state of Kentucky through 20 games with 478 points. Since then 2 more games have been played and 68 more points have been scored giving her 546 points on the season. She is also ranked 1st in the state in 3-point field goal shooting going 77-195 from behind the arc.
LC (16-6 overall, 8-5 region, 3-5 District) faced Piarist in the All “A” Classic at the EXPO Center several weeks ago and had a 72-38 win. Porter also collected a double double on the night grabbing 13 boards to go with 5 assists and 1 steal.
The Bulldogs defense shut down the Knights all night allowing just 3 points in the 1st period and 5 points in the final period.
Dawgs’ senior Kara Kirk added 9 points as sophomores Shelby Hay and Laken Fitch each netted 8 points respectively. LC pounded the boards on the night pulling down 47 rebounds, 34 on the defensive end.
Piarist (4-14) are in the 15th Region and had one bright moment on the night as they outscored the Bulldogs in the 3rd period, 12-8.
The Dawgs have 8 games remaining and are looking for their second straight 20 win season under second year head coach Roger Harless. Porter has 1,657 points in her career up to this game against the Knights and would have to average nearly 43 points a game in the final 8 games to reach the 2,000 mark.
LC will host Elliott Co. on Saturday, February 2 with game time beginning at 1:00/2:30 pm. On Monday, Feb. 4, LC will play host once more to District rival Paintsville. Game time 6:00/7:30 pm.
