#9 Lady Rebels upset #7 Sissonville in a “Buckwild” Class AA showdown;
GLENHAYES, WV – Coming into Tuesday night’s contest between the #9 Lady Rebels and the #7 Sissonville Indians in Class AA play, it was also a fight for the top spot in the Cardinal Conference.
The Rebels came in 7-0 in the conference as the Indians were 6-1, so the #1 spot was on the line for both schools. Tolsia junior Savannah Winnett led the Rebels with 24 points as she pulled down 13 boards, 4 assists, & 1 steal as Tolsia upset Sissonville in front of a packed house at Rebel Arena, 63-47. The Indians were led by freshman Karli Pinkerton who also knocked down 24 points.
The Rebels junior point guard Krista Maynard scored the first 6 points of the game as she finished with 14 points on the night. Maynard picked up a double double grabbing 13 boards also as she dished out 7 assists on offense and picked 5 steals on defense. Maynard is also the leading scorer in the Cardinal Conference averaging 17.5 points per game as teammate Winnett is fourth scoring 14.8 points per game. Tolsia sophomore Sheree Vanhoose knocked down back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to give coach Morrones team a 12-9 lead after the 1st period.
The start of the 2nd period the Rebels didn’t hold the lead long. With a quick basket by the Indians to put them down by 1 point, freshman Madison Jones drove the lane and was a fouled as she had two attempts from the charity line. Jones sank both shots from the line and gave the Indians their first lead 13-12 with 7:19 til the half as she finished with 7 points on the night.
Tolsia fought back to take a 18-14 lead with 1:37 on the clock, with just seconds left til halftime the Rebels still had a 4 point lead, 20-16. The Indians Pinkerton sets to take a pass in the corner from beyond the arc and launches it to hit nothing but net as Sissonville went into the locker room down by 1 point.
Coach Morrone’s squad came out to begin the second half with the stingy defensive play that allows them to take control of a game. The Rebels defense had 11 steals and 2 blocked shots in the game. With just 4:00 minutes gone in the 3rd, Tolsia jumped out to a 33-21 lead. Senior Jamie Maynard hit double digits for the Rebels as she netted 11 points with 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
Tolsia (10-3) never looked back in the second half as they outscored the Indians (11-3) by 17 points to go on to claim sole possession in the Cardinal Conference with a record at 8-0 with the win. The Rebels shot 59% for the game.
The Lady Rebels will be on the road Friday, Jan. 25 as they travel to Herbert Hoover to take on the Huskies. Game time 7:30 (forecast is giving snow for Friday so please check to see if the game is still on before making the drive up there Rebel fans)
