1934 - 2013
God gained another great man in the early hours of Sunday, August 11 as his Angels swooped down and took Morgan Skaggs quickly and quietly. Morgan had been waiting patiently the past few days for that journey. He was of the Baptist Faith and had professed his readiness to go “home”.
Morgan was born on the Skaggs Family Farm at Martha to the late Arnold T. and Margaret Jane Wright Skaggs on October 27, 1934. In addition to his parents he was proceeded in death by two sisters—Mary Ella Skaggs and Esta Vanover and one brother James Luther Skaggs. He is survived by one sister Magalene (Carl Ed) Tackett of White House, KY and one brother Ora Franklin (Dotty) Skaggs of Philpot, KY.
On January 25, 1958 Morgan married his life life-long partner Nola Mae Sparks. They continued to work side-by-side for nearly 46 years. She preceded him in death on December 5, 2003. Morgan and Nola Mae were the proud parents of four children whom they instilled their hard work ethics, high morals and values in, two daughters – Kay (Robert) Ison and Jennifer (Mark) Hardin both of Louisa and two sons that lived on the family farm with him – Gary Morgan (LaWanda) Skaggs and James Richie (Pam) Skaggs. Morgan also had four grandchildren that were extremely important to him – Travis Kyle Ison and Jessica Mae (Cody) Johnson, and Markus Colten-Morgan Hardin of Louisa along with James Anthony Skaggs of Martha. Recently his first great – grandchild, Silver Abbagail Rayne Johnson was born and he was able to enjoy a few visits with her.
Morgan has spent his entire life on the family farm where he learned his hard-work ethics at an early age. By the time he was eight years old he could drive their team of oxen that was used in the family lumber business. Most of his work in the lumber business was done with a special team of mules. Morgan continued the practice of hard work on the farm until a few short months ago. Once he realized he would be unable to work the fields this summer he said, “Why can’t I just go on? I am of no use now. I am ready to go.”
Morgan was the fourth generation to accept the reins to the Family Farm that was established prior to 1885 and will continue to thrive as the reins have now passed the fifth generation. In addition to his own farm, Morgan has either plowed the soil or harvested hay from nearly every farm in rural western Lawrence County. For many years Morgan did his farm work with equipment pulled by his well-trained team of mules. Morgan took great pride in his crops always striving to produce the best. In addition to hay, he was a tobacco farmer from his youth until just the recent years. He also tried his hand at mass producing bell peppers for a few years.
During his younger adult years, Morgan worked in the oil-fields in both Lawrence and Johnson Counties. Some of this time was spent working alongside his father and sometimes with his brothers.
In 1974 Morgan added another job to his list when he joined the staff of Lawrence County Schools as a bus driver. He continued to drive the bus until he retired in 1992.
Morgan was a very private, humble and caring person who had great compassion, for his fellow man, neighbors and community members. This was evidenced by his willingness to always help them out. Morgan was the go-to man for hay baler repair as he was a self-taught expert on baler repair and would travel to wherever someone would request his expertise and would never accept any compensation for services. Also, he would be one of the first on the scene with his tools to assist with servicing graves for neighbors, family, and community friends as this was another of his expert skills.
His children and grandchildren have been left with the tremendous task of carrying on Morgan’s legacy of hard work, dedication, and humbleness. In addition to his children and grandchildren, Morgan leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins to cherish his memory.
Morgan’s nephew, Rev. Billy Joe Sparks, and the Rev. Paul E. Keaton will conduct the Celebration of Morgan’s Life Wednesday, August 14 at 11:00 AM at Elizabeth Baptist Church at Martha. Morgan’s nephew Rev. Billy Joe Sparks and the Rev. Paul E. Keaton will conduct the service.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 13 from 4 PM to 9 PM at Young’s Funeral Home in Louisa and beginning at 9:30 AM Wednesday at the church. Morgan will be laid to rest on the Family Farm at the Arnold T. Skaggs Family Cemetery on Coal Creek. Friends and Family are invited to a reception at the church following his burial to share stories and celebrate Morgan’s life.
