Clarence “Click” Castle

1928 - 2013

Clarence “Click” Castle, 85, of Louisa, KY passed away Thursday Oct. 17, 2013 at his residence after an extended illness. Click was born Sept. 18, 1928 at Denton, KY, a son of the late Clarence and Effie Bond Castle.

This man had a remarkable and productive life. He grew up in Ashland helping his grandparents run a rooming house on Greenup Ave. He joined the Army in 1944 and was a military policeman stationed at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He always told the family the story of he and several other soldiers being loaded into a truck in the middle of the night and taken to the edge of the base to guard a building with huge cables, bright lights and electrical wiring running from it, around the base. They were instructed to “shoot to kill” if anyone trespassed. He often wondered that he was guarding nuclear bombs. He later was transferred to White Sands Proving Grounds witnessing an atomic bomb test blast.

After leaving the Army he attended Marshall University and worked on the “riverboats” on the Mississippi River. He was the second man hired at Big Sandy Power Plant and eventually retired as a shift engineer.

After work you could often find him on the ballfield coaching little leaguers or broadcasting games with the deep resonant voice that was his trademark. After retiring he volunteered with the forestry department at the Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Park. In his 70’s he was blazing new hiking trails and worked hundreds of search and rescues. But his favorite thing was taking care of the herd of buffalo at Gladie Creek.

Click was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and Richardson F&AM Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Adams Castle, a brother Hollie Edward Castle. Left to cherish his memory is Sister Laverne Adkins and Brother Richard Castle. He is also survived by his second wife Dale Watt Castle, daughters Judy (Mitchell) Herron, Patricia Beckman, and Kelly Castle, sons Michael (Deborah) Castle, Daniel (Alma) Castle, and Douglas (Sherry) Castle, stepsons Lance (Amy) Watts and Lyle (Bethany) Watts. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews all who will sadly miss their Poppy.  He is also remembered by special friends Edsel Perry, Bruce Adams, Earl Samm, Don Fig, and Hugh Catron.

Click loved camping and the great outdoors. He was a lifelong Kentucky Wildcat Fan. But most of all he loved his family and was always quick to tell them how proud he was of each and every one of them. His memory will always tug at our hearts with the loss of this wonderful and caring husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend to everyone.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted on Sunday afternoon October 20th at 2:00 pm at the Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Jonathan Hall and Rev. Willie Gene Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in the Graves Cemetery Route 581 Louisa, KY.

Friends may visit after 4:00 pm Saturday at the Wilson Funeral Home.
