CHILLICOTHE, OH — The Rev. Quentin Lockwood died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at his home in Chillicothe, Ohio, where he had moved in 2008 to be near family.

He was born Nov. 2, 1922, in Louisa, to the late Ike and Jenka Kennedy Lockwood, the third of five children. Quentin loved to read, even as a child. He excelled in school and was valedictorian of his graduating class at Louisa High School.

In 1940, he entered Ashland Junior College where he met Mary Alene Boggs, who became his wife in 1943, just before he was shipped overseas as a navigator in the Army Air Corps. Based in Italy, he completed 40 missions before he was injured when his B-24 bomber was shot down and he was seriously injured in a crash in the Adriatic.

He returned to Georgetown College in Georgetown on the GI Bill and completed his BA degree in preparation for the ministry in 1947, followed by completion of his B.D. (M.Div.) degree at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville.

He was ordained to the ministry in 1946 and served as pastor of Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Williamstown, Salem Baptist Church in Southville, Wildwood Baptist Church in Ashland and Hardwick Baptist Church in Milledgeville, Ga.

In 1961, the Reverend Lockwood was appointed by the Baptist Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to be the first director of missions for Nebraska. His primary role was to help start new churches. In addition to traveling the state, he and his wife, Mary Alene, began the Omaha Baptist Center for low-income residents in downtown Omaha.

The Reverend Lockwood joined the staff of the Home Mission Board in Atlanta in 1968 and remained there until his first retirement in 1988, serving first as associate director of Pioneer Missions and then as director of the rural/urban department.

When he and Mary Alene moved back home to Ashland in 1989, he became interim pastor for a number of churches in the region: FBC Paintsville, Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Ashland, Louisa and Olive Hill, earning the endearing title, “Pope of the Big Sandy.”

He retired a second time in 2000 and remained in Ashland until his and Mary Alene’s health required a move to Traditions of Chillicothe.

The Reverend Lockwood is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Alene; his son, Quentin Lockwood Jr., and wife Elizabeth of Syracuse, N.Y., his daughter, the Rev. Susan Lockwood, and husband Bruce Landis of Chillicothe and his son, John Lockwood, and wife Lisa of Raleigh; nephew Kevin Boggs of McDonough, Ga.; niece Debi Acaldo of Duluth, Ga., who lived with Quentin and Alene; and a brother, George Lockwood, and wife Reda of Williamstown. He was also close to his seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, and left behind many friends all over the country.

He was predeceased by his parents, and his siblings, Harold “Buck” Lockwood, Dorothy Rankin and Barry Lockwood.

The Reverend Lockwood touched many lives in significant ways. He loved his wife dearly, felt deeply about his faith and the church, cared about the poor, was proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, had a keen intellect and could tell a good joke.

Funeral services were led by the Rev. Bill Messer at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel, with visitation from noon to 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, it was his wish that donations may be sent in honor of Quentin to the Alzheimer’s Association, 6100 Dutchmans Lane, Suite 401, Louisville, KY 40205-3284 or the Kentucky Baptist Fellowship, P.O. Box 7098, Louisville, KY 40257.
