From the Heart...

THE GIVE AND THE TAKE

All through the years, there’s been give and take
between my mother and me;
She’s given…I’ve taken,
but that’s not the way it should be.
Today I glimpsed the tally sheet
and my selfish heart ached within;
for on my side of the long, long list
was taking…where giving should have been.

She has given me life, love and laughter
and was always right there when I called,
ready to help any way that she could
any time that my life became stalled.
She pushed and she pulled ‘til I went on my way,
Carefree…not thinking to say
“Thank you, Dear Mama, for making me strong,
and for teaching me to know right from wrong.”

I’m trying to clear up that one-side list,
hoping to do all I can to change all those minus scores
to plus;… I’ll see if I can balance it out.
Mama never complained a single time,
But I have a very big doubt
if I’ll be so generous with my children’s faults,
I’m so much more selfish you see;
But oh, I must hurry and even the score
before God wipes my slate clean,
and there’s no more time.
