FRANKFORT, Ky.  – Governor Steve Beshear, joined by Rep. Derrick Graham, of Frankfort, today signed a measure to promote enhanced opportunities for outdoor activity for Kentucky's children.

House Concurrent Resolution 29, sponsored by Rep. Graham, recognizes that increasing outdoor participation of Kentucky's children and young adults is a public policy goal of the Commonwealth. It encourages institutions that serve children and young adults to provide free play opportunities, outdoor experiences and field trips to natural venues in support of that goal. The measure encourages youngsters to participate in an array of outdoor activities such as fishing, visiting parks or farms or biking on a safe route to school, among many others.

“When you think about the benefits of outdoor play for children’s physical and mental health, encouraging activities like these only makes sense,” Gov. Beshear said. “We ought to instill in all Kentucky children an appreciation of the outdoor world around them, and help them find opportunities to explore it.”

This resolution allows us to promote KY’s natural resources while also promoting science, math and wellness,” said Rep. Graham. “I am proud to be the sponsor of this resolution and appreciate Governor Beshear’s support and his willingness to sign the legislation into law.”
