Fort Myers, Fla. — Louisa native and former Lawrence Co. Baseball star RHP Chandler Shepherd ( 24 ) was recently added to the 2017 Boston Red Sox Spring Training roster along with eight other non roster invitees.
Louisa native Chandler Shepherd says…
“… Had a good week so far in Boston being around the Big League staff of the Red Sox. We have been inside at Boston College working out and throwing during the day. Going through meetings and seminar type stuff.” We went over to the Children’s hospital and visited with them, just seeing the smiles is such a humbling experience and really puts things into perspective for each of us with healthy family members.” You see 3-4 years olds and then you see teenagers as well.” All of the players went to the Celtics game last night and it was my first NBA game so that was pretty cool.” Excited for Spring Training can’t wait to get down to Fort Myers. This will be my third year, but first time being with the Red Sox on the everyday roster.”
Shepherd along with seven others will take part in a rookie program that began on January 16th and will last a week at Fenway park in Boston. This will ease the transition into becoming major league players with the Red Sox.
The program includes two workouts daily that emphasize conditioning and strength training as well as a concentration on fundamentals. In addition, the players are attending a number of seminars that will focus on the assimilation into major league life on and off the field. They will also help paint murals at Higginson-Lewis K-8 School in Boston on Monday, January 16, and visit Boston Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, January 18 according to MILB.com
