Editor,

This letter is in response to the articles covering the recent shooting in Las Vegas.

The second amendment of the United States Constitution states:
"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,
the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Obviously the need for a state militia has been replaced by the National
Guard and Coast Guard whereby trained military personnel are entrusted with
the defense of this country against domestic enemies. Their weapons are
tightly controlled and safeguarded.

The only two reasons for a citizen to own a firearm are for hunting or
defense of the household from intruders. In either case, ownership of a
handgun, shotgun or rifle is more than adequate to satisfy these purposes.
There is absolutely no need for any U.S. civilian to own any weapon more
powerful or sophisticated than these.

Accordingly, all handguns, shotguns and rifles must be licensed and
registered to the degree necessary to match weapon to owner at the click
of a computer key. Furthermore, we must guarantee that the mentally ill
do not gain access to them under any circumstances. Finally, if we had
prohibited the purchase of more sophisticated weapons several innocent
victims would not have died or been harmed at shopping malls, college
campuses, Congressional meetings, churches and now concerts. We as
a country must deal with this issue immediately lest our society fall back
to the days when everyone carried a holster.

Here's the problem in our modern society: the American people have sat silent while a vocal few have convinced our legislators that they can legislate gun control to fix all the problems. While doing this, the vocal few have convinced the American people that anything goes in America now while calling it freedom. When morality went out, our problems started increasing. The more we go that direction the worse it will get. The problem that no one can figure out how to fix is HOW TO LEGISLATE MORALS!! It hasn't happened and it never will.

Create all the gun laws you want, outlaws and thugs don't give a damn. Big cities have tons of gun laws, how's that working out for Chicago or Detroit?

+4 #1 Slippery slope 2017-10-09 10:36
Actually, the 2nd amendment was written in a time when the people had just won liberty from an unjust government. "What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms."
- Thomas Jefferson, letter to James Madison, December 20, 1787
My first reaction when I heard about the bump stock (used in Vegas) was that they should be banned. As I thought more about it, I realized more gun laws aren't the answer. Democrats already have been saying that they hope the banning of them will lead to a slippery slope. The end game for them is to take all guns. Strict gun laws in Chicago have led to an increased murder rate there. The problem is mental health, and that's what we should be focused on.
